I am currently birdless and living in an apartment with central heat/air. The temperature during the day is around 70 degrees with a nighttime drop to close to 60 degrees. I was wondering what species of finches could withstand those temps. I can provide a heat lamp but that will not do much to change the ambient temp in a cage. Willing to listen to any and all suggestions.

I Have had several species of finches that thrived in temps from 80-50 degrees. When it was in the warmer temps i just made sure they had plenty of fresh water and gave them water to bathe in through out the day and when it was cooler i kept heat lamps available for them.

My gouldians, owls, orange breasts and diamond doves do very well from over 90 to 50 degrees outside.

That should be fine. My house in winter is 70 during the day and 65 at night, with no supplemental heat or heat lamp for the birds, which are in my house. Even the more fragile waxbills are fine down to 50 degrees. I have kept waxbills and grass finches of various species in my house.

My bird room gets down to 58 degrees, and never above 80, and the birds never have any difficulties.

Thank you all for the replies. I know that most birds are fine at "extreme" temps once acclimated but will they be ok just thrust into these conditions? Say if coming from a constant 80 degree bird room.

If they are coming from a constant 80, then the drop to 60 might be a bit much, though I still think they would be fine and would soon acclimate to your temps. If in doubt, you could always put a small heat lamp aimed at one end of the cage on a temporary basis. They will huddle there if they need it.
