Hello every one, new in here from Denmark.

I have a forbes parrot finch and a few weeks ago i lost the female to him. As there are not many of them here in Denmark, and i didnt want him to be alone. I purchased a redhead split lutino today, at least till i can get new mates for each.

My question is what the offspring from these would be ? Most interested in if there could be forbes lutino somewhere, or is that not possible ?

I am very new to genetics, only have a little experiences with it from poultry.

Long term plan is to get a female forbes and male redhead lutino split male. So consider this as an experimental question.

Hi from Canada, and welcome to the Forum.

I am in the process of trying to breed Red headed PF at present, with no success so far. One male, three females, and he's driving all three crazy .

Anyway, there are several PF breeders on this Forum, so hopefully they will be able to answer your questions.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your birds in the future.

Welcome to the forum! There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles about housing, diet, and especially the Parrot finches. If you put your general location in your profile, it makes it easier to answer locale-specific questions later on.

Here is a link to another site about Parrot finches, though the section on the Red-throated Parrof finch is currently under construction. As far as I know, the only lutino mutation in Parrot finches is the Blue-faced Parrot finch, though I may be wrong. You have two different species of Parrot finch, so it would be best not to mix the two as far as breeding goes. Much better to get mates of their own species.

Not sure about the lutino element. Seen hybrid between these two species. Looked like for forbes with red in the head colours. Pretty baby but worthless. Breeder who had the accidental pairing couldn't give them away.

I have seen pictures of blue head + redhead offspring. What interests me in mine was the idea of a Forbes lutino, don't know what it would look like.

I doubt it will happen as the plan is to get right mates for both I have, and the female is still young.

Would it be okay to have the two pair in same cage?

Letting forbes hybridise with red faced is definately not advised, resulting hybrids would be sterile and you'd have trouble even giving them away.

Also if the red faced hen is split for lutino then the only way to breed more lutinos would be to pair her to a lutino or split cock.

You'd be better to keep the red faced and forbes in seperate cages when breeding in case they accidentally hybridise

Parrot finches will cross breed and hybridize, which is not recommended. Also, Forbes are very aggressive during breeding season and can drive a hen nuts, so make sure you have lots of greenery and space for them to chase/fly around during courtship. A Forbes with a RTPF, will likely produce offspring, but the mix is uncertain. You may get more of a seagreen back feathers or the offspring may have the red face and tiel or seagreen back feathers. The offspring may not survive or may be sterile, but I'd watch them to make sure they are healthy, if they cross breed. Also, Forbes breed at a young age, but can bond with a new mate after the loss of their original mate. Good Luck!
