Should Peep's leg look scaly?

Peep has molted again. His beak is a dark yellow now rather than brown and his legs look a lighter color and scaly. He has stopped bathing since the molt. Is he okay? Is there anything I should do? Many thanks.

Check his diet carefully, to make sure that all his needs are being met.

Continue offering a bath, with luke warm water. What sort of a bath container do you have for him?

You could also rub a drop of olive oil on his dry skin, but just a tiny drop (don't want to get him greasy).

I don't know much about scaly mites...... hopefully someone else with more knowledge in that department will come up with suggestions, or be able to say if it could be some sort of a skin disorder.

Thanks so much! You have been very helpful. He eats celery, organic bird chow, bird seed mix for small birds and millet sprays with an occasional dried meal worm.

I would offer more variety of greens and vegetables with a little fruit as well. Hard boiled eggs, are a great source of protein, and very beneficial to molting or breeding birds.

A drop or two of a bird multi vitamin in the water can be helpfull as well.

Vegetables:
Spinach, Broccoli, Romaine, Cucumber, Corn, Beet greens Carrot greens, Parsley, Grated carrots, Red Swiss chard, etc. A nice Baby Spring mix, is also great.

Fruits:
Apple , Orange slices, chopped grapes, Melons, Bananas.

Good luck

I think all canaries get "scaly" feet as they get older. I find the males more so than the females. I was looking at my 2 yr old canaries and the male's feet look like your bird's feet. The females not so much. It's a good way to tell if you are being sold a spent breeder if unbanded.

Anna that's good to know.. Just last week I noticed my male canary's feet are looking scaly. He's about 5 years old (his leg band says 2010).
He's in seemingly good health and shows no sign of itchiness or irritation on his feet.
He's the only canary I've ever had and didn't know quite what to make of it.
Thanks for sharing that info with us :D
