Hi All,

We recently got two boys (i think) and having had a look around online I always managed to end up on this forum.

I tried to attach a little picture to introduce them to everyone but it did not want to load.

There is the white one called Udon (I think he is albino since his eyes is red unlike the others i have seen that is white with black eyes. Please correct me if I am wrong though)

And then there is the very soft grey one called Noodles.

The one thing I am not sure about at this time is - should I cover them up at night or can I leave them open?

I am really happy to meet one and all.

I started out covering my birds at night, but gave up on it very quickly. I found that there was really no need for it, unless your birds are in an extremely busy area.

I usually turn off room lights at around eight in the evening. Turn off flight lights at nine. And turn off last small light, when I go to bed, at around eleven, twelve or there abouts.

Lights get turned on again around seven or eight in the morning.

Birds start getting ready for bed, at 8pm. Go to sleep at 9pm, and are up with first light. No problem.

The problem was that each time I try and upload the pic it would just time out despite having a file size of 300 KB.

Awesome, they live in our lounge that is pretty quiet at night. There is the bit of light coming in from outside.

They kinda put themselves to bed around 8 pm ... Glad to see it is normal.

Not a Java sparrow expert so I'll let them answer your question. I personally never covered any of my cages.

As lovezebs mentioned, they wake up/sing at daylight. So for me, they got covered on Saturday and Sunday....so I could sleep later than dawn!!! They would sing/chirp/beep/meep at the first daylight coming through the window where their cage was placed. Now I have an outdoor aviary and they can sing/chirp/beep/meep all they want. My Goldbreast waxbill male would sing BEFORE dawn to let everyone know "it's coming" !!!! He is still the first one up in the morning!

You will learn so much from this forum. These guy here are so knowledgeable and very willing to offer advise whenever needed. Oh, and we LOVE pictures! So please post some when you get it figured out.

Very handsome boys ! They look quite curious!

Both sing so from what I figured only the males sing and the females does this whole meep thing.

The white one is quite happy and inquisitive but the gray one is quite nervous so I have a suspicion that he is younger than the white one.

They are settling in nicely though despite trying to fly all over the cage if you come too close.

This coming weekend I am hoping to get a swing or two in the cage and change the food bowl out for a foraging bowl with some nice stones and stuff. And maybe a mirror with a bell.

I read quite a few places that seeds should not make up their whole diet and that there is safe foods that you van give them.

Now safe goes hand in hand with moderation as well?

Here is a list of safe and unsafe foods. Like anything else, moderation is key. Switching out what veggies to offer each day makes it more interesting for the birds.
