Mounting

Ok kind of weird question but do female finches mount each other? My two society females (I know for sure they're females) Romana has been mounting Sarah Jane and not just hopping over her. It really looks like she is trying to mate her. Why would she be doing that?

Thanks

My society females never mounted and are pretty quiet (unless sending out and "alert signal" which both sexes do)

I think you have a quiet male doing the mounting honey. My first born male has been the LAST male to sing but quick to mount his buddies.

Hes actually just now working on his song. I was definite he was female, he was so quiet.

I've never had a female mount (unless shes was rudely walking over another finch and it looked like mounting). And I had 14 societies housed at once (before I rehomed my females). And I did sucessfully end up with a flight cage of all males. woohoo! (I was nervous for a while).

Oh man, more babies on the way!

It is common for males to mount other males, a dominance display.

May I ask how you know that the two are hens? Both laying eggs?
Some of my males do not readily sing.

These are both female they have laid eggs when in seperate cages..so I know for sure they're females.

My female zebra's mount each other. All it takes in my cage is one bird to mount another then all of a sudden everybodies mounting each other indiscriminately.

I have seen male Societies mounting each other, but it's usually a jump on, jump off kind of thing.

I have not seen the females doing this though, and the fact that they are actuall going through the motions of 'mating', is unusual, but to each his or own I suppose. Maybe one of them is a he/she :-D.

Could it be a dominate thing? I do have a few females so maybe she wants to be top dog/bird. Sarah Jane is the only one she does it to and Sarah Jane tries to peck the dickens out of her when she does it too

Oh life with the silly birds 8-}

I do know some dominant female dogs will lift their leg to urinate even though most people assume this is a male dog 'thing.'

I can't see why some dominant female birds may also bend the rules.

One other thought...is there a nest? My societies would climb onto each other and rest/keep warm at night when they had no nest. I since separated the sexes and provided nests. :)
