Cleaning cages

If your talking about deep cleaning, I use Pet Focus disinfectant for my cages monthly.

Day to day cleaning I just use a mild detergent like Dawn dish liquid with water to clean off bottom grills from mess with a scrubby brush, rinse and dry.

I use hot water and white vinegar. It does a wonderful job.

I used to use Poop Off and then decided to try Aviclean. Haven't decided which one is better. I also vinegar and keep a small bucket and scrubby just for cleaning bird stuff.

I use Dawn as you do. If it's safe to bathe birds after oil spills, endorsed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Association of Avian Vets, I'm sure it's fine to clean our cages.

I use the original Dawn, not all these new oxy clean and anti-bacterial ingredients. Just plain old Dawn. A&P near me also sells their brand of an organic soap that is good, no fragrance, just clean soap.

The monthly cleaning with a good Vet disinfectant like Pet Plus makes me feel good. Probably drives the birds nuts....

We have one of the best Vet Hospitals in the NY/NJ area (Red Bank Veterinary Hospital) that I take my dog and my Cockatoo to and they use Pet Plus to disinfect all their areas and swear by it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been using Clorox wipes on the bottom pull out tray and grate, but then rinsing and drying after the Clorox. I'll try the Pet Focus or Pet Plus depending on what my local store carries.

They are soooo cute and soooo messy!

I clean my cages daily (my birds are inside and poop a lot!) - They have wire bottoms, but I have paper over this (so birds don't get feet stuck in them). I remove the paper and bottom, and clean the tray with hot soapy water (every two days). I also take everything down and wash it in warm soapy water and dry it off. (My birds fly free - so they generally ignore me when I am in the room and doing this).

Whatever works for you.

I use a steam cleaner for deep cleaning the cages - no chemicals, great cleaning, outside of the heat-up and cool-down time it is really quick. All my cages are dividable, so I don't have to take the birds out of the cage when cleaning. They aren't happy about it but they are happy seconds after I am done. I use VirkonS for cleaning water bottles, baths, nests, etc.

I use Virkon S or white vinegar or sometimes hydrogen peroxide wipes.

Big teardown, remove the birds from the cage type clean is done with Bleach and water (away from the birds, outside or in another room) Birds are placed in a clean holding cage and their cage is sanitized.
