New to the Hobby with Zebras

Post by Empyreal » Tue Nov 24, 2015 6:40 pm

Hello from Utah!

I'm new here as well.

I received a beautiful hutch for my birthday with 2 male Zebra Finches. We went out and bought them girlfriends. So now we have 4 finches in the hutch.

Image

We've had them for about 3 weeks. They both built nests and one couple is doing great. They eat and sing and one of them is always on the eggs. They both take turns almost equally throught the day and both stay in the nest at night.

The other couple laid eggs, one fell and cracked and appeared to be unfertile. One egg still remains in the nest but the female stays on a perch all day long, all fluffed up with her head tucked into her back. Her mate picks at her and the only time she responds is when he tugs a feather. Neither one sits on the single egg. The only time the male enters the nest is to chase off the other male who takes things from their failed nest to put in his already thriving nest..

What should I do? Should I buy another cage and put the male of the unwell female in there so she can rest? Should I put them both in there with new nesting materials?

I don't want to do the wrong thing. He seems to be bothering her and I don't want to take her out of the cage for fear that it will stress her.. The couple seems to ignore her for the most part. The male stays right at her and seems to be plucky and antagonistic. My husband thinks he is trying to persuade her to the nest but who knows what goes on in a bird brain?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Nice setup! What often happens with Zebras is that 2 are fine, 3 to 5 don't work, and 6+ are fine again. #-o This is because they tend to be pushy anyway, and when you have an odd number like 3 or 5, that always leaves one odd man out that gets bullied by the others. Four doesn't always work either, because you can have a dominant pair that picks on the one other pair. Once you get to 6 or more birds, it seems to help with aggression (unless the cage/flight is too small, in which case you will always have aggression problems).

I would say that your aviary would be perfect for one pair of Zebras. Remember that soon you will have more when those babies join their parents, and that aviary could quickly become overcrowded.

Your little hen is probably being picked on. If she is spending the day puffed up and head tucked under her wing, she is not feeling well. She should be separated, and I would give her a heat lamp. This can be as simple as a gooseneck desk lamp with a 60w bulb aimed at one perch, always making sure she can move away from the heat if needed.

I'm going to split your post off into its own thread, so that it won't be overlooked and others will have a chance to chime in with their own suggestions. I'll title it 'New to the Hobby with Zebras' for now, you can always let me know if you want a different title for your thread.

Thanks for helping out! You are great!

So I'm going to take Sally's advice and make my poor hen a comfy place of her own to get feeling better.

What about her mate that is picking at her? Should I leave him in the cage with the other 2? Or should I get 2 cages and separate both the male an the female into their own area?

Boy.. this sounds like it's going to get out of hand :) That's okay, I really just want to do the best thing for my little birdies..

Is that the best thing to do? Will he get depressed? Or maybe I will put them in separate cages but keep the cages in contact so they can visit and take notes from the happy couple. Maybe I will set them each up in a separate cage on either side of the main hutch.

Is that the best thing? or?

For now, I'd keep the little hen separate so she can rest. If you leave the odd male in, he may interfere with the nest of the other pair, better if you can remove him as well. Yes, it is amazing how quickly this hobby expands!

Hi

Agree with Sally, that your one little girl needs rest and warmth, with good food.

Make sure that she has hard boiled egg and cuttle bone, plus crushed egg shells available to her.

You could possibly purchase a 30/18/18 cage for now, and separate it in half (male one side, female one side), until your girl is feeling better.

Regarding Zebra Finches and breeding, and space....

Zebras, are the rabbits of the finch world.
They believe in raising large families, and will continue to do so, untill the nests are removed. They are sort of the gift that keeps on giving, endlessly.

Unless you wish to be over-run by the little cuties, I would take out the nests once this clutch is fledged, and toss any eggs that appear in seed cups, or cage floor.

Zebras, being territorial to begin with, will become downright aggressive if crowded into too small a space, so that's something that you definitely want to keep an eye on and keep under control.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, I did notice the aggression thing. They were all sing-songy and fine, until the egg laying started. Then they changed their tune! The males chase each other and one of the females started showing signs of stress.

I'm happy to report that today she is looking much better! I woke up to the sound of her going crazy on the cuttlebone and then she went down to one of the food dishes and was making up for lost time there.

Yesterday I put a water tube, shallow bath plate and larger dish of food on each side of the hutch so they both have their own set of each thing to minimize territorial behavior. I have ordered 2 large cages so as soon as those get here I will move one set of birds into a cage if they are still getting along, leaving the other cage to put the babies in once they fledge.

We are looking at getting another hutch because they are so pretty (there is a local artist who makes these) and separating the birds into male female colonies after we have these little babies.

This is quite the experience! It's been fun but I'm taking your advice to heart. I don't want dozens of Zeb Finches! Just a small handful is good :)

Haha! I just read what you said, to my husband. His eyes got huge. "My gosh, what have I gotten myself into!" He says.

LOL, He was already worried when I ordered more cages and talked about getting another hutch. I guess he never thought he could have been married to a crazy bird lady. Too bad ;)

Well, you can tell hubby, that after twenty years of Lovebirds, I wasn't going to have any more birds....

That lasted about three or four months, then I heared a Canary singing in a Garden Center....

Luciano, came into my life with his lovely song, and he was going to be my one and only bird......:-)

At present, I share my life with :

Canaries
Zebras
Societies
Gouldians
RH Parrot Finches
Budgies
Shaft Tails
Cut Throat
Strawberry Finches
Goldbreasts
Red Brows
Orange Cheeks
Owl Finches
Pearl headed Silver bills
Star Finches

I hope I'm not forgetting anyone, or I'll never be forgiven, lol.

On second thought, maybe better not tell hubby. Don't want him to go into →

Whoa! I won't mention that to my husband. Right now it's me that has

Haha! That's a lot of birds!

I did think that converting the sun room into an aviary would be super cool though.. You could fit a whole lot of finches in there!

Somebody stop me!

Converting a sun room into a bird room ? I'll be right over :-D.

I so so wish that I had a sun room to convert into a bird room, sigh......I actually found some pictures on line of some of these bird room / sunrooms, and posted them on some thread here. They can be pretty dreamy... :YMDAYDREAM:

I think that would be just the greatest idea. Plants and birds everywhere :-).

Don't tell hubby until after its done, tee hee hee.

Regarding your comment about 'that's a lot of birds!' Hee hee hee, that's the number of species... (not the number of actual birds :-))
