Cast iron bird bath

Post by Barbara » Tue Feb 16, 2016 5:17 pm

Hello I am new to this site but have been enjoying and learning so many things.I have a adorable little bird bath it is the perfect size to put in my flight cage, the only thing it is cast iron seems to be coated and is a bird bath but was wondering if I should use it for fear of it rusting,I also thought I could put a dish inside but it would take away the look, want it to be safe.Any thoughts?

Yes, a photo would be helpful. If you would put it in the cage just for bath time and then pull it out and let it dry, that would solve any rusting problem, I would think.

You would need to be sure the coating is safe for finches and will not leach into the water. If it was made to be a usable birdbath and not just decorative it sounds like it just might work. Would love to see a picture :)

when cooking with cast iron some of the iron leeches into foods... not sure if that is the case with water sitting in it or not. Birds can suffer iron toxicity or iron overlaod... if offering as a bath they may drink out of it.

Have you thought about seasoning it like you would a cast iron pot? That might seal it enough so you could use it. It's so cute!
