New birds cage question

We just received a very large double flight cage with a divider and next week we will be receiving 3 new pairs of birds - Blue Capped Cordon Bleus, Red Billed Fire Finches, and Red Faced Star Finches. Should we put them in the cage together without the divider in place, or should we put 2 pairs on one side and the other pair on the other side initially? They are being shipped to us in the same shipping box.

If this is the HQ or A&E double flight (about 64x21x35), I would put all three pairs in the cage without the divider. The Cordon Bleus and the Fires should get along just fine. The Stars are the ones I would keep an eye on. They should be fine with the other birds, but of the three pairs, Stars are just so inquisitive that they could bother the other birds. If you eventually want to breed, this could be the pair that will try to get all the nesting material for themselves. If that became a problem, you could always put in the divider and keep the Stars on one side, separate from the others. But I would definitely try them all in the whole cage to start with.

Nice collectrion, I love all three species. I used to have Stars, and I do miss them, they are such fun little birds. As I said before, they are the most curious birds, they were always the first to try out any new foods, or check out any new addition to the cage. They love to bathe (all three species do).

to find out how many birds will fit in a cage, remember with finches height doesn't really matter, it's length & width for flight room. So just check that out, and again Sally knows her stuff, and is probably much more familiar with those birds than i. The reason I chimed in, is because I'm from very close to you in MA and wanted to ask you where you purchased these unique breeds from? As I'm sure you know, the pet stores in our area only have hookbills, Society finches and Zebra finches, and as far as breeders go, I haven't found any in MA, and the one I found in NH (love her) is pretty far away, I mean i've used her, but it's a long drive, and she doesn't have finches all the time (she's more of a hookbill hand feeder, but I got my Gouldian's from her) So I was wondering if you don't mind asking you where you got your birds from, and if they had/have other species too. I keep Stars, Red-billed Fires, and Red-cheek Cordons in a flight, no problems whatsoever.

Congratulations! I think you will love these three species

A good word about Stars.
They are curious and inquisitive, that's true. However, when my Owls, abandoned their clutch, it was the Stars who stepped in, incubated and hatched the eggs, and successfully raised those two Owl babies (as first time parents ).

We ordered the birds from the FinchFarm.com . First time we have used them. Could you tell me the breeder you purchased your Gouldians from in NH. We live on the NH border and want to get a another Gouldian pair sometime in the future. We plan to go to the bird show in Manchester, NH in April so maybe she would be there.

a_gouldian YES!! I'm going to that too, and she will be there!!!! Oooh how exciting to maybe get to meet someone on the forum!!! (most peole I'm friendly with here are from Canada, Florida or Texas!!!) LOL. I will be at that show (its the only one around here!) Her name is Anita Golden (Nitasnest.com) she will be there, if you'd like we can arrange to meet there and I can introduce you. I believe her Gouldians won't be colored up in time for the fair...but if you don't mind the drive (she's the same exit as the polar caves... so she's deep) But I wouldn't mind doing that at all. I will PM you my phone number, and would love to meet up at the bird show!! (can you tell I'm excited?) I think I might be getting a Silver Gould from her... and if her Owls ever decide to cooperate, Owls.... But she is great, she hand Raises African Grays, and Parrotlets. (got my plet from her too) and she has lots of finches....and canaries... I know she said they haven't really been cooperative this season!!! LOL, but she does have Gouldian young in her nursery/aviary.... I was looking at that website you mentioned... I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the info!! And I will deffinitely PM you in the next week or so and if we can't meet at the fair, I could at least give you Nita's email (just want to let her know first) so that you can find her at the show!
