There are several indoor aviaries at my mother in law's nursing home...the kind that look like a built in piece of furniture with glass doors. These have 6 or 7 birds each. How does one open the door to clean it or change the water or feed without the birds getting out. I'm interested because I would like to build one into my new home.

I asked about that once on Facebook in a finch only group I'm a part of and someone answered and inspired me into converting a hutch into an aviary. Her name is Kelsey Hartsell she's the owner of Chatter Lane Aviary. She has Youtube videos posted on her aviaries and the different birds in them.
She stated that she has a long piece of curtain attached to the top of the hutch and let it hang over the open area when she opens the glass doors so the birds won't get out. You have to see it to know exactly what I'm talking about. Search on Youtube for the video Upcycled Furniture Aviary it's around 3 minutes and 39 seconds long. Hope this helps.

I'm currently in the process of buying a used hutch this weekend to start working on turning it into an aviary for my finches.

Thanks for that information, Peter, that should be very helpful to anyone wanting to convert furniture into aviaries. A local hospital had one of those aviaries in their lobby at one time, and I know that feed and water were supplied through small doors at the bottom of each end of the aviary. The ends also opened up for cleaning, but I have no idea how they kept birds from escaping.
