First nestling, is this normal?

I have my first finch baby. It is a little Zebra. The baby seems fine but I'm concerned about the parents. Is it normal for them to leave the nest and stay out? I haven't been watching them constantly but I have been checking in a lot and everytime both parents are outside of the nest. Usually at least one was in the nest so I'm a bit concerned that they don't know what they are doing.

How old is the baby? Normally, parents will still stay in the nest most of the time for the first week or so. After that, they will start staying out more and more.

It was only about six hours old when I posted this. I had set them up on the patio and was watching them through the window and the parents never went back in the nest the whole day. Very strange, they were acting a bit crazy! I finally brought them back inside and mommy bird quickly started acting more like I had expected. So I think things are looking better for sure.

I had read that they may not feed them in first 24 hours but I hadn't read anything about them just leaving the baby alone all day. Looks like I was unnecessarily concerned.

Try to not move the cage around while they are looking after the little one. ;)
