I finally have my 2 Male Gouldian finches ~

Post by JerseyGuy » Sat Jun 25, 2016 1:57 pm

I finally brought home my 2 Male Gouldian finches - one Purple-breasted and one White-breasted.
They are really gorgeous. Right now they are safely in their new home and just chilling out on the
perch. It appears that they do not like anyone getting up close to the cage - it causes them to flitter
around nervously. Is that normal for Gouldians ? No activity thus yet. I'm sure that will change and
they will eat and drink and move about today at some point.

They'll settle down quite a bit once they get over the shock of moving to a new house.
They are unlikely to be as calm as canaries for eg. but if your movements are slowish any panicky fluttering is minimal.

Good luck with them. Any plan on getting a girl and breeding?

Oh No, LOL! There is no plan on getting a Female. I can't handle the
breeding thing at all ......baby birds scare the heck outta me!

They have become very vocal all of a sudden - and are now flying around the cage. I guess they are getting used to their new home.
I haven't seen them eat or drink yet, but I'm sure they will.

Congrats on the new birds! I posted in your other thread that one thing you need to watch with new birds is that they are drinking (eating too). If you use tube waterers, some birds that aren't used to them have trouble figuring out how to get water. I always put a small dish of water on the bottom of the cage. Even the most timid of birds can figure out where to get water from a dish.

Put a water bath in there and make them a salad bar. Once they realize your the bringer of all delicious eats they will settle.

A water bath ? What is that ? Is there a special Container sold as a Bird bath ?

what ingredients make up a Salad bar ? Do you just buy salad fixins' chop'em up, put on a plate and put it on the cage of the floor ?

Water bath can be a deep saucer, soup bowl etc.
Or use a wall mounted food holder full of water. Some of my Gouldians prefer that to a bowl sitting on the floor.
I use plastic ice cream bowls from one of the 99cent stores. 3 for $1.

I have a Crock on the bottom of the cage filled with water - I haven't seen either Gouldian use it for bathing. One Gouldian uses it to drink from. :(

Some take longer then others to try new things. Mine always bathe in the morning and then if it's hot again in the afternoon.
The thing to remember with gouldians is to NOT give up and keep trying, and that goes for food you want them to eat too.

good luck

Update :: I mixed some Egg shell in with some High-Calcium Grit.
Neither Gouldian would touch it.
SO I will try another plan . . . . :?

Have you tried just offering crushed egg shell by itself in a cup? Gouldians are notorious for being picky eaters and slow to try new things, so just keep offering. You can leave the egg shell in a cup until they eat it or it gets pooped on, it doesn't go bad.

Congratulations on you're new finches ! I have two canaries, one bathes in a small cake pan at bottom of cage, the other in a metal feeding dish attaches to the cage. I hope you have good luck with the bathing situation !!!
