Has anyone ordered any finches from the Finch Farm? I'm new to getting into Finches and I planned on ordering a pair of Zebras however I'm not to sure how they will be in terms of how wild they will be. Will they be scared more so than a captive bred Zebra? I'm pretty sure Finch Farm's Zebras are wild caught? Maybe? And has anyone ordered birds from them before? Thanks. -Feliburn

Any Zebras you get in the U.S. are domestic, as wild-caught Zebras have not been allowed to be exported from Australia for many years.

Hi there,

To be onest zebra finches are not wild caught no more and this has been stopped for many years, in fact my friend all zebra finches that are bred are all captive bred, they are very easy breeding birds and over the years have now been bred by many experienced breeders and exhibitors around the world to a very high std,

We've got some extremely serious breeders here in England and you'll normally find that most champion exhibited zebras are literally twice the size compared to the wild birds,

Same as the British / European greenfinches, now fully domesticated with many colour mutations

I would think you could find Zebras locally for much less than shipping birds in. I cant imagine you having to drive to far to find a shop that has them. I could be wrong if you live in a remote area, but I would definitely call around before shelling out big $ for shipping and the headaches that could come with it.

Agreed.
Shipping by air will cost you more than $100. It is no longer legal or possibly safe to ship via post office.
Hardly economic for birds that sell for only a few dollars from home breeders.
If nothing else, go for a nice drive this weekend and pick up your birds in-state. Spend part of the shipping money on some gas and a nice lunch. The breeder should also be a good source of information.

I agree try to find zebras close by. If you still decide to get them from finchfarm ask for shipping to be done by the airlines. The heat around the country is bad right now and people are still having them shipped USPS, the birds are not kept in climate controlled areas like with the airlines. I will not do USPS again due to the fact on what was to be an overnight delivery from someone that could only use USPS to ship the birds were literally lost for over 4 days. The were misplaced at the departing hub for 2 days before someone discovered the box...birds are shipped on Fed Ex to the receiving hub and you can not track them once in the air....they had them for over two days before they arrived in Tampa...they left from New Orleans. The were to arrive on the forth night but never got to the hub and finally arrived at 7 am the 5 th morning.

I know I'd personally never purchased any birds where they have to be shipped like that , not only that you don't know what yer buying,

I'd never ever buy a bird without looking at it first,

That to me is really bad practice

Surely there's gotta be enough specialist zebra finch breeders in the states

Well duh, I never even thought about the fact that it doesn't make sense to have inexpensive birds shipped unless you buy a lot of them! You can always check craigslist, there are usually ads for Zebras there. One thing to watch for, if you buy two Zebras from the same person on craigslist, they are most likely related, so you wouldn't want to let them have babies (a difficult task with Zebras, since they are the rabbits of the finch world). If you aren't too far from Joliet, IL, they have a bird mart almost every month. Marts are usually the best place to find birds.

Stuart... I had a dear friend that had a number of gouldians he was keeping, he became very ill and asked if I could give his birds a good home with me. I was happy to help. Due to his health he could not make the 3 hr round trip int New Orleans to the airport. The Post Office was closer. The first shipment went off without a hitch and arrived in a timely manor. The second was the one with the issues. Fortunately all the birds survived, the shipping box was supplied with food and water.

Personally when I ship birds to someone I use the airlines, I also receive bird this way as well.

I can go along with that, in those sought of circumstances I think that would obviously be acceptable as yer doing it as a kind jester for your friend as its something you don't do on a regular basis

One thing to remember, Stuart, the U.S. is a vast country. Many members live in an area that doesn't have any bird clubs or marts available to them, no pet shops that carry birds, so they are forced to have birds shipped to them. Societies and Zebras are the exceptions, they can be found more easily than other species.

I recieved 2 birds by mail in good condition. Very fast the post office called me to come get them. They were in a poultry box with a perch cucumber slices water & food. Have heard Gouldian s don't travel well. Zebras are so easy to find every let store has them
