Males and Females

Post by Katy23 » Fri Sep 01, 2017 10:21 am

Hi,

Thank you all for answering my previous newbie question. I am new to this bird business and appreciate all the advice.

I have three male zebra finches (male I think) adopted from shelter and living together in a big flight cage. Local shelter has additional females to adopt out.

I do not want to breed them and wish to avoid stimulating egg laying. If I keep some females in another cage do they have to be out of ear shot of the males to avoid egg laying? or does it make a difference ?

My avian vet says they need to be in separate parts of the house....thoughts? She also said that multiple females together can stimulate each other. I'm not sure what the right answer is.

Thanks for your opinions !!

The girls will occasionally lay eggs, even without boys around. Of course these eggs will not be fertile, and you can just toss them when and if they show up. Also they are less likely to lay eggs if there are no nests in the cage.

Unless you live in a HUGE house, they will hear each other anyway, so it really makes little difference if they are in another room or not.

I agree with elana they are always gonna hear each other and will tweet to each other I personally would avoid as it will be stress full having them none stop tweeting why not got some females of another finch breed
That way they won't breed

Females of another breed will have no effect at all on a zebra's urge to lay eggs but will run the risk of the zebs attacking the introduced foreigners.

Deceasing egg food, protein, fatty seeds will also help hens' hormones from going in overdrive and dropping eggs... avoid nests, nesting material.

Egg food is needed when molting and feeding young... it can be given once a week if not at all.... a good seed mixed with pellets, greens, sprouted seed will help.
