Do my finches hate each other?

Post by ShannTmw » Fri Oct 27, 2017 6:57 am

I’ve posted a little while ago about my zebra female and my society male.

I’ve tried to introduce them three times since I got my male and so far they both don’t seem interested... she tolerated him for almost a day the first time then started pecking and chasing him. So I separated them. The next time took only a couple hours and she started to peck him and he started pecking back at her. The last time was only about an hour and they were pecking at each other and she was chasing him.
I don’t have a cage big enough to get any more birds right now, I’ll be upgrading as soon as possible the cages around at my pet store aren’t good enough. I have them next to each other in smaller cages now. Is it because the cage isn’t big enough and she’s being territorial? I cleaned and changed everything around but unfortunately I was told the size of the cage would be fine. It’s only about 20 in X 24 in.
Are they just not a good match? Is there anything else I can try before I get the bigger cage?
I’m sad and a little frustrated because I’m not sure what to do..
Also a random question. I have Timothy hay for them, we’ve always given it to them at work. My society is eating it, is that normal and is it okay? I’m not sure if I should keep putting it in there or not? He seems to love it tho, playing with it and putting it in the water.
Thanks everyone!

You can see her lame wing. She had either a broken or sprained elbow joint. She can’t fly well, up then down.

Would a cage 24x16x16 be only for now? I can get one in the next few days but I’m not going to waste the money if it wouldn’t work?

Finches should have at least 30 inch in length to fly back and forth. Zebras can be very territorial and societies are very passive/gentle. Might not be a good mix.

Hopefully some zebra owners will chime in to let you know if there is anything you can do.

While others recommended a society for your hen, I would not have.
I have had the two species bond once, but it was a male zebra with a society hen. The reverse didn't seem to happen. We had a lone old hen for a few months with a society cock, and while she tolerated him, she wouldn't give him the time of day.
She eventually bonded to another zebra hen we intro'd within a few days.
That might work better, just don't get a male because they can be very violent.

ShannTmw if I was you I would give the cage a clean add different colour paper to the bottom and move all perches and food and water things around so the zebra doesn’t think that she owns the place haha :D hope it’s okay in end

I think I need to get a bigger cage in general. I know it’s too small and I feel bad. When I got it I was clearly unaware... should have done more research but I’m a dumb ass haha. I did clean out the cage completely, changed all the perches and everything. Still didn’t seem to make a difference.
Once I have a bigger cage I’ll try again. But if it doesn’t work what should I try? Should I be getting friends for both?

ShannTmw I’m certain that if u get a bigger cage then they will be fine as it’s none of theirs so they won’t have territorial problems and they will be getting used to the new cage.

I wouldn’t say get a friend for both because if u get another zebra and then another society then the zebs will just be a bigger bully with more back up

I really think the cage will work

Hi there,

You are not a dumb ass!!!

Regarding cages, you'll probably have to order one on Amazon.ca, or e- bay, to get anything of a decent size.

Here are a few options, not sure what your price limit is.

https://www.amazon.ca/Prevue-Pet-Produc ... 44&sr=1-28

https://www.amazon.ca/PawHut-D51-026-Pa ... _91?s=pet-
supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1509300091&sr=1-91

https://www.amazon.ca/YML-Large-Breedin ... C6K09D3DXT

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/You-Me-Finch-Rec ... 2813709723
Not sure of size

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Large-Aviary-Bre ... Swol5Yx15P

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-Large-Bird-C ... 0005.m1851

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Pawhut-30-Small- ... Swno1Zmbpk

I used to check kijiji on a regular basis, and have found some wonderful flights for a fraction of the price that they would have cost me new.

If you can't find anything else, you can always grab two small ones and put them together, making them into one bigger cage.

I would probably keep your finches seperate if they are fighting- I permantly have to have my 2 finch pairs seperate otherwise they just fight.

I’ve been looking and I have just a smaller one for now. But in a few weeks I’m hoping to get this big one here. Even if I can’t put them together I’ll still have it for them in case. He’s in a 24x16x16 and she’s in one a bit smaller, but she doesn’t fly because of her wing she can’t go very far.
Thanks for all the info!
