Advice for a male zebra finch

Post by madoi » Mon Jan 01, 2018 5:40 pm

I have a male zebra finch named Mr. White that I adopted a few years ago and he's around 5 years old now. Sadly, he recently lost his mate of two years, Dria, to cancer (and Sylvanas, his mate before her, died due to a liver problem).

Mr. White is usually the chillest zebra I've ever met (not much bothers him unless - understandably - I have to reach for him), but... he also has the habit of being a territorial little jerk when he wants to - even when the cage has been rearranged (or they've been moved to a new one) with no nest and he'd been acting sweet while they were side by side and separated.

I know that he needs the company of another finch, so I'm thinking of getting another male since I don't want to worry about babies right now. But I'm not sure how to go about making sure he would be compatible with them or how long it might take to know if they are. I'm also worried about the age gap if I get a young finch.

Any advice? :-??

madoi it won’t cause much problem the age difference one might just be more lively and jumpy
However but sometimes it’s actually better because the younger one will understand the older one is the dominant one and not cause fighting issues

What about a different species like a more passive one

I think you should get another male and see how it goes. Good luck!

which species would you recommend? I know that societies get along with zebras, but I'm not sure about others.
