Nesting
Hi there
My male and female have built their nest, played 5 eggs and have been sharing the duties of sitting on them. This morning I noticed the the eggs are now covered with the nest fluff. Any ideas why??

Re: Nesting
Cra Cra Finches will bury their eggs for various reasons. They may have decided the clutch is not fertile, so they start building a new nest on top of the old one to start again. They may be so into laying that they will continue to lay/cover/lay/cover without ever stopping to incubate. They may be inexperienced and just haven't figured out that they need to settle down to incubation.
You can remove the nesting material covering the eggs, or you can clean out the whole nest, or you can leave them alone and see if they will settle down after building another layer and laying more eggs.

Re: Nesting
Cra Cra How are they doing now? I forgot to ask what species. Zebra finches are especially prone to building nest upon nest. When I first got started back into finches, with Zebras, one pair kept layering in a large hooded wicker nest. When I finally realized what was going on and cleaned out the nest, there were 20-some eggs in that nest! It was like a 7-layer casserole, with nesting material between each clutch of eggs.

Re: Nesting
Hi there
So 2 Zebra finches. I removed the extra nesting fluff to expose the eggs and they were sitting on them last nite and this morning. Funny thing I noticed last nite, they were eating together but kept flying to the nest as if checking it out. So tomorrow will be day 7 for the 1st egg layed. Weds Feb 28 will day 7 for the 5th egg layed.when should I start seeing a change in color if they were fertilized?
Best regards
Cra Cra

Re: Nesting
Cra Cra Even if eggs are fertilized, they don't start the incubation process till one or both parents are sitting tight. The parents can be going in and out of the nest and even staying in there for long periods but not actually sitting down tight on the eggs. Eggs can stay viable for about a week after being laid.
You can go ahead and start checking now if your birds are fairly calm and accepting of nest checks. There is a good article on eggs and what to expect here: http://www.finchinfo.com/breeding/eggs.php
There is also a great topic on checking eggs here: http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8295

Re: Nesting
All of them wouldn't have hatched, since the bottom ones never were incubated, but that was a lot of calcium being depleted from the hen. I had to rest her after that. Each clutch was about 5 eggs, so that was way too many clutches for her health.Fraza wrote: Sally I know that response wasn’t for me but bloody HELL. 20 eggs they was sure some busy zebras wow I find it a lot when I have 8 eggs in a nest but 20 imagine them all hatching lol
