Is my egg fertile? Dead? Help!

Post by Emily » Mon Jul 02, 2018 4:30 pm

Hi,
So on the side of a road I saw an egg, which I believe is a house finch egg - we looked for a good half hour for the nest, but couldn't find it - and I couldn't just leave it on the road.

It was in a makeshift incubator for a day, and now has been in a real one for a whole day as well - when I first candled it it had a small dark circle in the middle of the yolk - a good sign!

...but then it was mishandled and long story short got some hairline cracks (I covered them w/wax) and now the yolk is a darker yellow and I cannot see the circle - I am afraid it is either dead or infertile - I wish I would see some veins soon.

The temperature in the incubator is around 100˚ and the humidity is going well - any advice helps....

Thanks so much

Emily Here is a good article on egg candling and what you should expect to see at various stages.

If this egg is fertile and does hatch, you will have to release the bird after it is weaned, as it is illegal to keep song birds as pets.

Oh yes I plan on releasing it. Thanks!
Where is the link? The Emily link links back to my profile not the candling

Candle the egg. Basically shine the torch onto the egg and you should be able to see a dark mass which is the chick's body. If there are blood vessels, it's also a good sign indicating that the egg is fertile. Some people say that candling the egg too much could damage the chick, so try not to do that.
Have a nice day!

Usually when it’s dark yellow it’s died in egg but hopefully it’s not that bad and I had two eggs that were cracked and hatched so they can still hatch when cracked

If u candle and just look for a little black dot very small circling around the egg, moving then it’s alive

English Sparrows and European Starlings are legal to keep. Some people call English Sparrows House Finches.

Even if it weren't legal to have I'd keep it because I saved it from dying if u release there's more chance of it dying or being bullied as it doesn't have the wild birds abilities and strictures
