Male and female or two males?

I'd guess female on the left, male on the right, but it's hard to judge not knowing if they're both in breeding mode. If you could get close-ups of the sides of their heads and the tops of their heads, it would be easier to tell based on the eye location and beak shape.

The one on the right is just into adult plumage. The one on the left has done a 'bobbing dance' and one has sung but only when I'm not looking; I think it was the one on the left, though. No chance of getting a photo of the top of the head but One is wider than the other - but only a bit.
I'll see what I can do about close ups but they don't like the camera much.

Hmm, I don't know then, except that the one that sung is male.

One sits at a more upright angle than the other if that makes any difference; my male owl finch sits more upright than the female.

The male will have kind of a bulge at the base of it's beak, while the female's beak will be narrower in that area. Only males sing, females will only chirp.
