I know there are some people out there that have Red-legged Honeycreepers.

I have questions about feeding (nectar or just fruit), housing, compatibility, etc.

I have a pair of Blue Dacnis that are thriving, and am considering adding another tanager species - I just LOVE the RL Honeycreepers.

Mine are! Can't speak for everyone who has them, but they are simply part of a big, happy group here.

They are in a large aviary with Gouldians, Forbes, RC Cordon Bleus, and a pair of invisible Society finches (always in a nest).

I would someday like to add a pair of African Quailfinches to that aviary. They are docile, and while not 'bottom dwellers', they do spend most of their time low. Near impossible to locate any of those, however.

There are so many gorgeous birds I just drool over, but anything I acquire MUST play well with others.

Four aviaries is enough! I don't have any more room!

I bought a pair of Yellow-legged Honeycreepers some time ago, but I lost both of them in a very short period of time. Have no idea what went wrong. I was feeding them nectar, fruit, fruit pellets. They didn't try any of the various fruits I offered, but they did eat the nectar and the pellets. They were in a 21x32x35 cage by themselves. A friend thought it could be the chlorine in my city water.

Your mixed aviary sounds wonderful and you have a great color variety of species in there.
Do the Dacnis eat much fresh fruit?

I will keep an eye out. We have 1 quailfinch now and would love to have some more. The wholesaler here said he could get more, but then called a couple months later saying they weren't available right now.

The one we do have does spend all of it's time on the ground. It only flies up and perches when I'm changing papers, seed & water.

Thanks, birdclaws! I will do the same for you if you are looking for a mate for your lone quailfinch.

They get fresh fruit every day, and they do eat a lot of it. There is always SOMETHING around, so it really, really is not a big deal. Bananas, peaches, apples, melon of all kinds, etc. They should not get citrus very often, something to do with iron-storage problems.

Then, there are always canned - peaches, pears, etc.
They get a 'soft-bill' diet that I mix in the small Zupreem with.

I don't do nectar. They seem to be thriving. They are one of the smaller tanagers, and coloring is unbelievable.
Which is why I am looking into adding another smallish species, the Red-Legged Honeycreeper. (not in save aviary) Haven't decided yet, waiting and hoping for more information from someone on here that has them.

Doing further research, it seems these REALLY need daily nectar.
So, taking them off my list.

Will enjoy them vicariously through others.
