I think the primary purpose is to hang the canary nest on the outside of a cage and also to allow the breeder to observe the nest/eggs/babies.
3 Purple Grenadiers, 1 Goldbreast + 1 cat.

Here they are still commonly imported from China and cost ca $60 each. I'm seriously tempted, with the main concern being that they are hard to sex and traders claim that nearly all sold here are males.

BigBear0007 and Sally --- Ah, I get it on the little nest cage thingie!

Super clever!

My dumb self didn't think of putting it outside the cage in a nestbox port!

I was thinking it went inside the cage. (And inside the cage, I couldn't think of what purpose it would serve other than making it harder for other birds to land on the nest edge and serving as a guide for pod-style nest builders!)

Wow, do I feel stupid! #-o
Of course it goes outside the cage in the nestbox port.
That makes a lot more sense. *eye roll* What a dim bulb! #-o

w.l. --- Wowee! $60 each? I'd scoop a bunch, even if they were all males (and hope that one's a girl!)
They're so very lovely!
Humum to....

Sexing isn't hard. Check under the tail, the hens have more grey with a narrow amount of black on the edges. The males have wide black edges and less grey.
The first picture is the female and second is the male.

Will try and see.
How compatible with other species are they?
I'd ideally like to house them together with small bulbuls, minivets and white-eyes.

They should be fine with all those birds.
Just give them plenty of their own space for breeding.

it was about $3-5 for a wild caught bird when i was in China 2 month ago, but price in Canada is little out of range, anyway, thanks for sharing.

Because they are not allowed to be imported Icefish.
They are on the CITES list.
All Pekin Robins are imported from Holland or Belgium now.
