Finally something works out :D
Hi all , thought I'd share a happy story .
Yesterday as I was walking home from work , I heard/saw a pair of white-cheek bulbuls making a racket in the building adjacent to mine. I was about to ignore them and walk by but I happened to chance upon a tiny brown blob next to them. I went close by and saw a chick maybe 10-15 days old . I couldn't leave it there as it was getting dark and we have many stray cats who would gobble it up in a moment. I looked around for a nest but didn't spot anything.
I immediately rung up a friend who has hand raised bulbuls and keeps a few at home. Unfortunately she did not have the time or the resources to hand raise the chick anymore. We do not have any local rehab centres as well . I decided to try to put it on a small tree which is in a small garden patch at the back of my building hoping that it would call out and be found by the parents . I knew I could not keep it too as I work full time have no experience with raising wild insectivores.
I brought it up home to give it a little water. I peeped outside to see if the parents were still around (they weren't ) and saw ANOTHER brown blob. I ran down with this guy to find a slightly bigger sibling sitting there. I grabbed both and placed them high up on the tree .
The green patch is right underneath my balcony . For the next hour I kept looking out for the parents but I still saw no sign of them. I'd decided that if they didn't show up by nightfall , Id go back down and try my best to hand raise them myself .
As I was about to give up and head down , I heard a familiar sound and LO ! there they were . The little punters chirped , mom and dad greeted them and settled to roost for the night .
This is the first time I've ever managed to have any success with baby wild birds . I've found everything from baby sparrows , pigeons , doves and even Indian Silverbills but none ever had such a satisfying ending as this .
The green patch where I put the babies and the place I found them (other side of the wall).
Daddy bird making a comeback
And the little cutie who took quite a liking to my giant warm hands .

What a wonderful thing to do, my friend. You have a good heart.
So happy to hear that the parents came back to their little fledges.

What a happy ending.
There is actually an introduced population of Red-vented Bulbuls here in the Houston area. Chris103 has seen them. I think they are simply gorgeous.

Interesting , we have red-vented bulbuls too. My friend rescued 4 of them which are kept as indoor pets. Apparently they tame up really well if hand raised .Colt wrote: What a happy ending.

Off topic though , I spotted a Purple Sunbird pair on that very tree this morning feeding on the nectar in the flowers. The male was especially stunning .
I've never seen any before . I'm surprised they manage to survive here. It goes up to above 50 degrees during the summers .
We barely have any flowering plants (barely any plants in general lol ) in the city either. Its quite incredible how a nectar eating species is doing so well .
Anyone have any information regarding them?

Hi , yes I have seen the family hanging around here. Seeing them all together gives me immense satisfaction .
I think the older sibling has gone off on its own ( I hope ) since he isn't here anymore . The younger one is still here with his parents standing guard .
