Info breeding Gouldians

Post by Hope » Wed Aug 29, 2007 11:40 pm

I have a split/blue Gouldian hen that I hope to breed around Nov. as she will be almost a year old. I'm going to pair her with a male split/blue who will be a little over a year. They are in seperate cages now. How soon should I put them together? Do they need time to bond first without a nest or do I wait till Nov. and give them a nest right away? As you can tell this is my first time for planned parenthood 8-[
The only other experience I've had is with my Star's which were already breeding when I bought them.

I wouldn't put them together until you're ready to have them breed - that's just me. Some pairs take weeks/months to get used to each other, but for some it's literally minutes!

I breed in individual 30x18x18 cages........

When I have a pair I want to breed for a certain color I put them together to see if they get along. Sometimes you can tell within seconds sometimes it takes months.

I bought a piar of StB. Brought them home. Did the quarantine time. Then I put them in the Bird House. Within days they had eggs and then 3 chicks. I got my 1st Blue cock from this pair. Then I buy another pair of StB. Put them together in June and to this day they still have not giving me any babies........

It's all a game of chance...............
Happy Birding......<><

I would just put the pair together. If they are interested in each other you will notice it but also it allows you to see if they are compatible. If not you will have to wait till both are in breeding mode where they will more likely accept each other as mates.

After 20 years I find my self back to gouldian finches. My best loved bird. Colours are amazing and the mutations they come in fascinates me. I'm hoping to breed and enjoy what they have to offer.
