seagreen parrot finches

Post by wellingtoncdm » Sat Sep 18, 2010 7:43 pm

It appears that I may have two different color seagreens. Both are pied but one male is brighter light green and bright orange and the others (male, female and youngsters) are all duller blue-green and dull orange. The pied areas are basically off white on all of them. Does anyone else have this with their seagreens?

I will work on pictures. I have no idea how to get them from my iphone to here. They also are in an outdoor aviary and move really fast. It also has a bit of shade cloth till fall so it might be dark for great pictures but I'll try.

You can upload them to your computer when you sync your iPhone. If they are too large to post here, then what I do is email them to myself and make them a smaller size in the email program (there is probably another, better way of resizing them - I would love to hear about it!). Then you just upload them following the upload attachment instructions below the message body area of this form.

Hope this helps!

The color of the birds will greatly depend on the genetic make up of the birds. Also the diet, carotenoids, luteins in the diet that make the red/orange color and astanthin will have an influence as will sunlight and bathing (keeps feathers bright).
The seagreen pieds will never have the yellow color of the normal green pieds. The same factors that causes the muting of the red and green color that makes them seagreens in the first place will also effect the pied coloring from a yellow to a more whitish color. Also many time the hens will not carry as bright of color as the males.

On this page is a great example of the different pied coloring of a normal green and a seagreen red thraot.

I have crossed the normal green with the seagreen and normally get offspring of one color or the other, though I have one exception. It is a seagren that has some brighter red speckling in the mask. Very unique. I am waiting to see if the color cahnges to a pure seagreen pale orange mask with the next molt or if it retains the red and orange.

Thanks. That web mentioned seagreen pied as well as pastel seagreen pied. I think that is what I'm seeing in mine. I agree that the male seagreens are brighter but my two males seemed different. Now I know why.

Sounds like you have some beauties.... get those pictures figured out and posted  I would love to see them :D

Pastel is a term for yellow. Much like in a male gouldian. a single pastel factor is referred to as a dilute or single factor yellow. A pastel green or pastel seagreen would be a lighter shade than the normal coloration.

I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of your seagreen with the red in its mask, either, Candace! It sounds lovely.

They all sound quite interesting. I hope we get to see pictures.

Just venturing into pieds now as my seagreens are probably going to become pied as the stock they came from were. So now I am trying to figure out what girls to get them. Seagreen or heavily pied. What makes the nicest babies? I assume the heavier the pied the more heavily pied the offspring?

I am thinking that the red on the mask will fade even more. With the last molt much did come in orange...we will see though.

That is unusual. Should the seagreen mutation not be 100%. Never heard of a partial coloured mutation. Very interesting.

Love his name though.

I would think the seagreen should be 100%. Others from mixed pairings have been one or the other....just this weird one.
Not sure why it retained any red at all. I am pretty sure it is a hen. I will breed her to a red head and see what happens :D

Freckles is adorable! Maybe you'll come up with a unique mutation if you breed her to a redhead.
