Feeding either a GB or RCCB chick..chick pics! 10-6
I decided to inspect the flight to make sure there were not any more babies, I found one GB dead in the nest that the RCCB invaded. I don't know what made me look in the silk ferns under the nest but there was a little fuzzy probably about a week old, alive and very hungry.
I put together my warmer and took masshed egg yolk, dried insect powder and fine crushed pellets and fed it to it. After the first feeding I let it rest and checked on it 30 minutes later, it pooped! Good sign I am assuming. Fed it again a couple of hours later and it seemed to be doing well, resting in it's little bowl of cotton. Poor thing, last of the surviving chicks from two nest the RCC raided.
I am setting up a cage for the transfer of the RCCBs...very discouraging since I liked the idea of the mixed species but not at the risk of my little GB babies.

Good luck Cindy
I don't really think that feedings during the night are really necessary, but you do what you have to do. You go girl

It must be a challenge feeding so tiny a chick. Please post pics, I would love to see what GB chicks look like.
Good luck to you!

Good luck to you!

Thank you everyone..the little one has had 6 feedings and is doing well so far. It was a little difficult at first but it is starting to get the hang of it. At least it is not a newly hatched one. The size it is now reminds me of newly hatched lovebird babies. I'll post a picture tonight if I can. They are all black with little tufts. It makes itself known when hungry!

I'm glad it's large now. I can't even imagine handfeeding a goldbreast chick! You would need a magnifying lense.

Ok..now I am not sure what I have here, it is rather big, black and the mouth markings are tiny little dots all the way around the inside of the mouth, the end of the line on the upper mouth are two larger dots on either side. Gold Breast or RCCB???? The just hatched GB babies are pink...do they darken as they age?

It may just be me Cindy, but your baby looks a lot darker skinned

There were 3 species in the flight owls RCCs and GBs...it isn't an owl finch the mouth markings are way different.

Whatever it is it has a good appetite..likes a little apple sauce with powdered pellets, powdered insect and Breeders blend mixed in. It has taken at least 8 feedings so far.
