i met chris the day he picked up the male from sally!

i also wonder how they are doing and if they have raised as well.....?

now for the PETSMART part.... they DO NOT have a breeder for these birds.... they are all bought from the quarantine station in CALI...

i know this because when i raised WHOLESALE finches... i sold zebras, societies, gouldians, and a few others to the companies that sell to PETSMART and PETCO....

just giving the info that i know :)

Hey guys! Sorry Ive been MIA from the forum. I have good news!!! The pair is on their first clutch of 5 beautiful little eggs! It all happened VERY quickly after they went through a rather long moult....singing and courting one day and eggs just a few days later. Ive been totally caught of guard and need to get my fosters going just in case. They have been sitting very tight since egg number 4....I haven't seen both birds out together in days...when one gets off the nest the other is right back on it! I want to candle them soooo badly but I dont dare to touch those eggs! Im thinking that I will be able to tell just by the eggs becoming opaque around day 10 or so.

Forgot to mention that "the pair" now consist of a BCCB male. After much debate, looking at what seemed like thousands of pictures and comparing her to my other CBs I felt that she looked more like a BC. I guess ill know for sure if her offspring moult out with red cheeks. If that is the case then ill be pairing her back up with my RC male from Sally (who now has a new mate). I wouldnt dare breed hybrids just for the sake of a mutation....so lets hope I've got this right!

Oh, and the hen has kept all of her pied looking markings! Fingers crossed that its a genetic thing and that she passes it on! [-o<

She's gorgeous --!! I hope you get some babies! [-o<

I have found that the easiest way to tell the females apart besides the bright fuschia beak of the BCCB (at least for me) is their crests. The female and male BCCB are much more densely feathered on their heads and when they raise their crests you get a big round head. With the RCCB males and females their heads are not so densely feathered and when they raise their crests their heads are smaller and if you look at a male RCCB in profile when he has his crest raised you will get sort of an oval shape where the feathers stand out more at the BACK of his head instead of all over.

It's really apparent if you have both species for a while.

Do your females both have the same size crests and same color of beak? If so, they are most likely the same species. :) Side by side you can easily tell the difference between a BCCB hen and a RCCB hen.

Good luck with the babies, Chris! We're all waiting to see if the pied factor gets passed on. If there are any males in that clutch, you will know if your hen is BCCB or RCCB. I had a pair of BCCB male and RCCB hen, I knew in my gut the hen was RCCB, but I let them have a clutch, and sure enough, two of the babies are male, and they have little red cheeks. I think the red cheeks are dominant, so you will know for sure on your hen if they pop up.

I had forgotten how nice that little male RCCB was! Hope you get some babies out of him.

yep definately a rccb and a niced pied at that used to breed them myself over here in Aus ones like thatand more to pretty much just white wit the red cheeks showing by the looks its a grizzle pied nd its recissive so if u pr it wit a normal ull get splits then pr split bak to hen then go from there is what i would do and a very good find.
if u want any more info just ask me or if u want pics i can help you out a lil i no longer breed these

Hey Fincher, aren't most all the AU pied CB's the red-cheek variety? From what I've seen on the internet the BCCB's haven't popped up with the pied gene yet....

Hey, show us some pictures of yours if you have some! They sure are attractive little birds. (You may want to start a new post, though, if you have pics).
