I've had a few European Goldfinches over the years and always found them very nervous. I guess many sold in North America are wild-trapped and so they may have trouble adjusting to captivity - though I'd guess they are fairly active birds anyway. Mine just didn't seem to like being in a cage.

Despite being nervous, I did get them to eat thistle seed out of my hand. They seemed to love black oily seeds, which I've read are important for their diets.

The funny thing about mine , he was a an aviary bred bird.
Still, they are hard bird to keep.
I'm on other sites, and breeders who have kept them for years,
have given up on them.

Hardiness in mules is called hybrid vigor. The strength of a first generation crossbred.
There are also wild flocks of European Goldfinches established in North America in the midwest. Many people have seen them. I also gave up on raising them in humid Florida but many stores here carry them.

I'm so sorry that your little guy didn't make it. They are so beautiful looking. I've only seen one in person once at a PetSmart, and have admired them ever since.

I am so sorry about your loss. But this scares me a little, because I have a pair. Why did yours died? Its looks like a lot of people in Europe have them for pets and keep them for years. Is it possible because there they feed them different?

I am so sorry for your loss.
I do not know why your goldfinch died but I ve been keeping them for along years and one of them over 5 years old and some of my friends have 7-11 years old.

The European goldfinch is not the canary..
EGF's need large flight cages..
wide variety of food :seeds,sprouted seeds,wild seeds,greens,plants,insects..
bath,fresh water,fresh air,sunshine..
cleanliness, cleanliness, cleanliness : if you keep a goldfinch,in cages you must use grid over the bottom trays to protect the goldfinches from coccidia.
never handle..
Many regards

I was looking at your local weather conditions to find out your temp etc. and to my suprise it is below zero your way.Doesn't help for bird immunity system.
Search ResultsWeather for Calgary, AB, Canada
-5°C | °F Fri Sat Sun Mon

Current: Snow Flurry
Wind: SE at 10 km/h
Humidity: 100% -5°C | -7°C 1°C | -6°C 1°C | -6°C 2°C | -4°C

Looking at your pictures looks like you keep your birds indoors. On the subject of humidity is it only the humidity from the heat the goldfinch doesn't like or does it apply for the cold temp humidity as well which is 100% today?Does anybody know this?

Thanks Nirep,

Calgary is a funny city, we get "Chinooks" here. The temperature can go up by from -10c to +15C in six hours. It's an extreme that isn't good for anyone! I suffer from migrains and the chinooks torture me something awfull. So it can't be good for the birds either?
It seems I can't keep goldies alive here and many other breeders have had problems also. Calgary is supposed to be semi-arid and very low humidity, we don't need dehumitifiers, we have humidifiers on our furnaces.
All I know is, I have never lost so many birds in such a short time as the goldies. I have lost four in two years, that's well over $600.00.
So no more goldies for me, I can't afford it.
For now I will concentrate on my Cuban finches, and greensingers and get a pair or two canaries.

Jerry
