LONG cages!

Post by beephonkbeep » Sun Apr 17, 2011 1:36 am

nmjklo, hiii! so i'm new to finches... right now i only have a pair of zebras in a 30 inch cage, but i'm hooked. eventually i think i want maybe birds... but my space is fairly limited so an aviary is out of the question.

i'm looking for a cage that's 50 inches long, and longer than it is tall... but i'm having a heck of a time of it :( heck, even finding a cage longer than it is tall, but longer than 30 inches, is proving difficult, even online.

are there any sites that specialize in finch cages? sorry this is pretty basic stuff :? i haven't had birds since i was a kid, but i love animals so i really want to make sure i do this right!

I don't know about places online, but my Dad and I actually ended up building my 6 ft long flight cage. I wanted a bigger cage, but like you, couldn't find anything in stores. I actually got the idea for what I have when I saw a 6 ft handmade flight cage that someone was selling at the local flea market. They were wanting $200 for it, and I figured my Dad could probably buy the materials, being a lumber salesman, for cheaper than what I could buy the cage, so that's what we did.

If you're not that crafty to build a cage (and believe me, I'm not, my Dad did 95% of the work on the cage), you can always check out your flea market and see if they might have something along the lines of what you're looking for.

you can create one cage from two cages when in a pinch. Simply remove the sides of both and connect them with zip ties. I have done this with the regular 30 x 18 cages and the 30 x 36 inch high cages.

I have two bourkes on top and shaftails on the bottom, both flights are made from two cages each.

the bottom on the grate has a hook that goes over the bottom bar on the sides...I had to remove that to fit it snug. Attach the bottom together first.

what a great idea Cincy! Also I would research building one of your own if you have the time and tools. If you want to find a long flight cage you might have to order online. I haven't had luck in pet stores either. Oh, and welcome to the forum!

I found them on line but the shipping is terrible almost the cost of the cage...paing $100 in shipping was crazy al because of the size of the box not the weight.

Pooh - You would think...lol I might be able to build something, but just don't have the tools or the space to cobble something together.

Cindy - Brava! Those cages look awesome. That is a really grand idea and they look gorgeous sitting together that way.

Thank you, originally I wanted to build a big flight, I had it all designed out but ended up doing this to save time and it was something I could manage after having surgery on a torn tendon in the back of my hand.

All of my flights are multiple cages put together like Cindy has done. My bigger ones are four cages ( 30L by 18W by 36H ) put together. It seems near impossible to find long enough flight cages online. I myself wouldn't know the first thing about building one, so this seemed my only solution.

I should clarify, My bigger flights with 4 cages put together are double the length and double the width, they are not four in a row, but rather two in a row, one behind the other. They are the white ones like Cindy has pictured. I don't have a good camera right now to post mine. I ordered the cages on line from country feathers. The 30 by 18 by 36 will come two to a case with free shipping. They have gone up in price recently. I liked them better when they didn't have the slide out grates and they were cheaper. Seems like they raised the price because of the slide out grates. They are $144. You can also get the 30 by 18 by 18 four to a case for$156.

I was thinking of doing the same thing put the space I have would not fit a long and deep cage like that. Now it would work in the one corner if I did the two deep, two long and 2 high....what a huge flight that would be!!!!! Hmmmm...

Does it have to be a bird cage?

I used to have a large dog, smalled wire spaced dog cage. Sold it before i got my birds. Regret it now because i could of converted it to a bird cage.

BTW my dog was a german shepherd x husky x akita so he was a big lad and you could of fit a great dane in it
