Probiotics
Ok...I probably know the answer to my own question but....I have a practically full jar of probiotics, the little yellow tag is yellow it has two initials PB 0026 expiration date 01/11.
Now I know medication from the pharmacy is given expiration dates by law and most of the time are good past that date by a few months...does this follow true with finch medication? It has been kept in a cool spot, air conditioning.
I am placing an order for a few items and will order new meds, just curious on your take on this.

Re: Probiotics
I would use it for 6 months past the expiry date since you've kept it in a cool/dry location.

Re: Probiotics
As long as it is kept relativley cool & dry, I have used it up to 6 months past the experation date. This product contains a live microbial food supplement so it's effectiveness may be somewhat diminished but it should be minimal.. As for where to get it for the best price, if you will PM me, I bet I can help..

Re: Probiotics
I ALWAYS keep my probiotics in the fridge (and up until recently, all of my meds in general) - I would suggest others do the same if they have the fridge space!
The difference between probios and medications is that probios is generally live organisms/cultures meant to aid in digestion, restoring flora to the gut, etc.
Some believe finches do not have flora in the gut (i.e., Sterile Bowel Theory) and while I generally tend to lean more towards that side of the fence I do believe that offering Probios can help prevent things like yeast infections and other upper digestive problems.
That being said, with Medications the expiration is there by law and generally all it means is that as you get further past the expiration the medicine may lose potency/efficacy but not that it will "go bad."
With Probios, the organisms might not be as active - so again, less potent/efficient. If you store these items in the fridge you'll extend their shelf life, too.

Keeping it in the fridge...how much time would it extend the shelf life on most of our bird medications? Are there any that should not be put in the fridge?

Re: Probiotics
I think you can safely use medications like Amoxicillin, Tetracycline and other powdered meds for up to 2 years after the expiration.cindy wrote:Keeping it in the fridge...how much time would it extend the shelf life on most of our bird medications? With the liquid meds like Baycox and Worm Away, I probably wouldn't use them for any more than 6-8 months after expiration, and I would still keep those in the fridge.
I don't know of any off the top of my head that shouldn't, or rather can't, be kept in the fridge - most of them indicate to store in a cool dry place.

Re: Probiotics
I kept mine in a container in a cabinet or my panty...the house is air conditioned...I think to be on the safe side I will not use anything once it is 6 months past the expiration date since it was not stored in the fridge to begin with. Anything due to expire in 2012 I will stick in the fridge now.
I have Medistatin also. Thank you Tiffany.

Thanks for the info on the PM in the outbox
.. I kept thinkiing I was doing something wrong when it didn't go out as soon as I sent it
As for the PM on the prices... I am a distributer for this line of products and other ones.. I didn't join the forum to sell products or birds, I cherish the information I find here
.. It feels like conflict of interest to do otherwise
But when I see a posting with someone having any issues I try to help via PM..
