I would personally be back at that store at this very moment for that price.

They have beautiful songs.

My breeder friend that I purchased my Societys from (and he gave me 3 Zebras

for free

) gave me a price list of the finches he has from last season's babies that are for sale. So I guess they are about ayear old or less?
Societys- 15.00
Zebras-15.00 (the ones he gave me were Penguin male, saddleback male and a Silver or normal female. So he has a good variety)
Javas- 19.00
Gouldons- (he said he has lots) 65.00
He had owls but none for sale right now.
His birds are clean and well cared for. I've always been happy with them. (we bought a parrot from him a few years ago but he doesn't breed parrots anymore) From what I can see his prices are fair as well!

I wish I was more familiar with shipping live birds, I would go and get them for you

That is a great price! The Petsmart near me has two males for $40 each. They seem to be getting along, but your store may have run into problems with two males in the same cage. They can be territorial.

This could be a record (it is the highest I've heard of being asked) for Strawberry Finches.
$225 each! (says banded 2011)
I'll pass.

Wow, so my little clutch is worth $900?!!

Mine are banded 2011, fledged and banded 2-3-11, and I really can't sex them yet (of course, I haven't really tried very hard, as they are so young). Where did you see this, Liz? It is a shame if that breeder isn't trying to work with other breeders to swap bloodlines and improve the gene pool, which should be the goal of everyone with this species today, instead of just thinking how much money they can get for them.

Petsmart did have green singers for $20 at one point at the store near me. I asked why and the manager said they were being discontinued and would no longer be carried, guess they didn't sell very many at their normal price of $80. So I bought all their green singers and all their blue capped cordon bleus, which were down to $75 for a pair (normally $200). I just wish they would stop selling canaries, all the stores I visit has their birds wheezing and coughing from either ASM or secondary bacterial infections.
I just got back from a bird expo in Palmer, MA. Prices as follows:
Green Singers $35
Owl finches $90 for 2011 banded birds (I picked up a 4yr old pair for $125, figured I still had a few years of production but I may be wrong)

it's funny how prices vary from one place to another.
Here in Spain you buy canaries and strawberry finches for $30 but blue caps are around $150 !

Buffalo, NY
At a locally-owned petstore today, I saw:
- zebras $20 each (up from $18 in December 2010, when I got mine)
- owls $100 each (a lot, I know, but it is the first time I have seen them in a petstore in this area)
- shaft tails $130/pair
- stars $100/pair
- societies $22 each
- cut throats $100/pair
- varigated canary $100 male, $80 female
- red factor canary $140 male, $100 female
At another petstore, a small chain store, I saw
-societies $20 each
- zebras $17 each
- gouldians $ $100 each
- RF canary male $110 closed banded
Unfortunately, I did not think to check for banding at the first place I went, but I think their canaries were also banded.

Whoa! Nice prices on the singers... the Petsmart where I work [in the bay area, california] has a singer and two cut throats for $80 each. Orange-cheeked waxbills are $40.
We have a really hard time selling finches... by far most of the birds we sell are Parakeets. When we do sell a finch, it's almost always a society or a zebra. My co-workers say whenever they sell something else, they have a party
One of my co-workers expressed surprise that the singer hadn't been discounted, because it's been there FOREVER. If it does, and I'm able to take it home by means other than public transport....
