RCCB Egg!

Post by waxbill lover » Wed Aug 03, 2011 4:14 pm

Well, my RCCB's have been courting/breeding for the last week, and have managed to find enough (what I thought was hardly any at all) nesting material in their aviary to build a nest...little brats....and low and behold an egg has been laid today! I'm a little worried because if they do hatch chicks, I'll be gone for holidays, and won't be around to feed mealies or boiled egg to the parents everyday, and my birdsitter doesn't know much about any of these birds...basically put seed & fresh water in their cage and thats about it.

I did some research, and typical incubation is 11-14 days if I'm correct with what I'm reading. Has anyone had luck using dried insects for raising these guys? I've been providing the birds with dried SUKSES eggfood, and they seem to enjoy it quite a bit, as well as chopped kale, carrots, broccoli and apple everyday.

I suppose if they do toss chicks while I'm gone, theres nothing I can do, however at least I'll know they're a compatible pair, and that hopefully they'll try again...

When our daughter bird sat for a week for us I made sure there was a tupperware full of already made up egg food in the freezer and one in the fridge. I walked her through spooning it on their dishes and to make it easier on her I told her to pick up the dishes in the evening. It was very easy. I also have big seed hoppers set up so she didn't have to give seed and only clean water in the water tubes when needed. She took very good care of them while we were away. I don't think it would be any harder for your sitter to give them egg than seed. Especially if you tell him/her the chicks will die without it. I know it was very easy for our daughter to take care of them with everything fixed and ready to go.

Trish, did your RCCB's keep their babies while you were gone with having this egg food available?
