tossed egg with a dead chick

Post by ibon_337 » Tue Aug 30, 2011 10:40 pm

I'm expecting 5 eggs to hatched starting tomorrow from my Normal x Yellow back gouldians and a while ago I saw one egg on the cage floor. I thought the hatching started maybe late in the afternoon, curious I picked it up and found a dead chick inside. The chick is cold and yellow in color. This pair had their first clutch and tossing happened, actually they are great parents. Is it possible that they felt the chick inside is dead or sick or something thats why they tossed it? Anyway I'll keep an eye on them to make sure if ever they'll toss again I am hoping I could save the chick.

:(
If the egg was intact, the chick could have died in the egg at late state or was unable to pip its way out of the egg.
If the egg was open, it could be the chick was too weak to finish hatching.

gud luk on the rest of the eggs

the egg was open, at first I thought it's only a shell but when I picked it up there's a dead chick.

Most likely the chick was not strong enough to make itself out of the shell on its own
My gouldians will not leave a dead or dying chick in the nest, they will toss it out.

All four eggs hatched the tossed egg is well compensated. Time to let them alone and do their jobs in raising their chicks. I might post some pics when they are a bit older, I don't want to disturbed them as much as possible. This pair is the same pair that I moved from aviary to a breeding cage when their first hatchlings fledged due to some problems with my other pair.

On the other hand the chick I am handfeeding from my Blue + Normal/Blue died this morning. The chick only lived for 9 days.

=D> on the 4 chicks

:( for the handfed one that died. You did better than I was able to do. I did not get past 5 days.
