Red Chest Bar On Gouldian

Post by PrettyBird » Thu Dec 29, 2011 2:51 am

I just noticed that my male gould is getting a red chest bar right below the band of white. Is this rare for them? Or more common in the wild?

I tried to take some pictures to show but had to have the flash on, so its very hard to see. In person you can really see it. Im sorry :(

Why is he getting a red band now?

Not rare, it's called a red line or fusion bar and it's believed that the gouldians had this in the past but it's been bred out over time. Personally I like the look and I'm glad you see it more and more. Here's a link to a little more information about it: http://users.skynet.be/fa398872/engoulm09.htm It shows up really nicely on a WB.
Very pretty SFYellow you have there.

Your bird is lovely! I don't know much about where/how the red line originated, but think it looks really nice and adds a richness to the birds' colors.

I love the look of it as well! It seems to be getting darker by the day. Right now its a peachy red color.

I just found it interesting that its coming in now :-k ...so does this mean that he is younger than I thought? about a year or so? Im not sure.

Also will he carry this red line, onto his offspring? I would love if I can get more of them from him. How does this work? Does he have to be with a specific mate for this to happen?

I'm not sure that the fusion bar is that well understood yet. Here are a couple links to other threads talking about it. If you do a search for red line lots come up.

My uncle has a bird identical to yours, same coloring and everything, he has a fusion bar also, it may occur more in this color mutation. (Rh/wb/yellow back)

Thanks for the links debbie, Ive checked them out before as well. Hmm so he could possibly pass this on to his offspring...I wish I knew more about this.
But even searching on the internet I dont find much about it, other than that one site you sent. frustrating!

Dante- or really? hmm its very interesting. I really love the red line. It really just adds that extra something that seemed to be missing ;)

Is is thought to be passed on from the hen (mother) to her sons. So seems to be a sex linked trait. I am still breeding to see how it passes through my lines but results will probably take a few years of observation and many breedings :D

Maybe that explains the off color yellow back. My uncles is split to blue and looks the same as yours, even the off yellow back
