gouldian hen had a "seizure" or something

Post by ac12 » Mon May 14, 2012 11:08 pm

I saw my hen on the cage floor on her back and fluttering.
This was NOT GOOD. Whenever I have had a gouldian have what looks like a seizure, on the cage floor and fluttering, they all died within minutes of the seizure.
When I got to her, she looked almost ready to die.

I moved her to a hosptial cage, and about an hour later she seemed to have make a remarkable recovery. She was on her feet and eating.

I have a heat lamp on the hospital cage.

The 3 hens in the cage were being treated with 4-in-1, because one or more of them had diareah/very watery poop.

Any idea what might have happened, and what to do for her?

Can you tell us what strength you were using for the 4-in-1? If it's the same product I use I feel like the dosing instructions are only for large parrots and therefore are hard to translate into a proper dosage for smaller birds.

Like Kenny said, I would be concerned that perhaps the dosage was too high and might have caused some sort of reaction?

I used the printed mix (1 teaspoon : 1L of water), scaled down to 1/16 teaspoon : 63ml water.

I got this off http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/product_4in1powder.php
Finches and Canaries- One teaspoon (3.5grams) per litre of drinking water or 1 kg food.

So LGF is posting it at a higher concentration for finches than pigeons.

This happened yesterday at about 6pm.
When I removed her, she was on her back barely moving, I though she was dead. I picked her up and saw her slowly breathing, so I put her into the hospital cage, figuring she would die in a little while.

I have the heat lamp running 24x7.
I came downstairs this morning expecting the worst, but she was standing under the lamp. I did notice that she ate a lot overnight.
2pm and she "seems" to be OK.

Well she isn't as well as I thought.
I went to change her water and she just stood next to the cage door, with me reaching right over her and touching her. That is definitely not normal.

I have her on gouldian seeds and NV powder in the water.

Personally I would remove and discontinue using the 4 in 1 if that's the only new or changed item recently.

I hope she recovers for you. [-o<

I removed the 4-in-1. At this point I figured she needs to recover from whatever caused the seizure. I will deal with the diareah later.

I also have MB Thrive, that I plan to give her in a few days.

Off topic - Gary, how are your BBF's doing? Ever get any chicks from them?

BBF?
Do you mean the fire finches?
You have an amazing memory.

Last year I got 3 clutches of eggs, but no chicks. Most were duds, but a couple eggs looked like they were DIS. They got redish, but did not develop. :(
I'm going to let them try again in a month or so.

She is getting better.
She is reacting to me when I stick my hand in the cage to change her water and food.
