Re: First Indoor Aviary
Nice job with the aviary! If you're looking to add a variety to your collection, wait until a bird fair or expo comes to your area. You canusually pick them up at 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of pet shop prices. There's one somewhere around here every couple of months. Good luck! Bob

Re: First Indoor Aviary
I chop my veges by hand into tiny finch-bite sizes. Everyday they get something green either broccoli, chard, bok choy, dandelion or chickweed greens. They always get a little pile of peppers, either bell or small sweet kind that I get from Cosco for snacking on. Then once a week I chop herbs from the garden and make tiny seperately piles of chives, rosemary, oragano and thyme for the finches to pick and choose from. I will tell you though, that indoors the veges are flung around, but is always eaten, especially the peppers.
I also pick seedling grass (Johnson grass) this time of year, and it is a huge hit.

Re: First Indoor Aviary
We made some final changes to the aviary which I now consider complete...
We added a new wire shelf to one side of the aviary to hold the birds food, water, etc as they seem to prefer eating at dishes rather than using feeders.
We also added the mini lights which you can see along the top of the aviary. These will come on at night before the main light goes out and remain on for an hour giving the birds time to find their nests before dark. All of our lights are now on a timer as well ensuring that the birds get a consistent light cycle.
We also removed one plant to give the birds some additional room. We will rotate all of the plants as well as a 7 foot majestic palm I recently purchased.
Here is the new shelf...

Here is the finished aviary...

Re: First Indoor Aviary
Hi finchfanatic:
Wow, nice aviary! My husband wants details: what you used for framing, size of mesh- is it stapled to frame, floor/ceiling- is it pegboard like back? How do you change cage litter- open one of the panels and rake it out? Any changes you would make now that you have tried it with birds?

Re: First Indoor Aviary
I love your new aviary but I have questions on how do you get to the feeders and dishes? Do you have small doors in the big doors and how do you get inside to change out the bedding?

Re: First Indoor Aviary
Wow your aviary looks amazing. I wouldn't need a t.v if I lived there. I often hear my partner telling me to come in side as I spend too much time just sitting and watching my birds. I don't think there is anything more relaxing or interesting...

Re: First Indoor Aviary
What a great idea for an aviary. It looks good and it is maybe something I could build. How did you connect the doors?
