This is a news catch-up for me. My story is, when I realized I had too much on my plate a couple of years ago, I gave my one remaining Gouldian to Liz (thank you Liz and my heart goes out to you with all you have been through).
Last year I also sold my aquariums, and that leaves us with our two dogs and budgies.
Again, a couple of years ago, we recognized that it wasn't fair to keep our budgie by himself, so I found a local rescue and we took Scales (his feathers are like dragon scales say the kids), a green budgie, into our home to be a friend for Popcorn, our blue budgie. The two of them share a 5 foot long flight cage.
They became best friends fairly quickly. Popcorn came from a local breeder, and was fairly tame. While he was alone, he learned to talk a bit, barks like the dogs, "wheeks" like the guinea pig we used to have (passed away), has a burbling song and makes several other household noises.
Scales grew up in the rescue, and was housed in the same room as the other budgies and the canaries. He sings beautifully! Scales was terrified of everything in the beginning, and it took months before you could walk past the cage without him flying to the far end.
Now you can walk by and he just watches, or I can get close and talk to them and he simply eyes me.
Opening the door, feeding and watering, cleaning the cage are all still scary though, and he sits in the furthest corner and watches while those tasks are done.
They are apparently close in age, which is nice for them and for us.
They two of them sing most of the day, no screeching budgie noises from our two! When I talk to clients on the phone I often get asked if I have an aviary, or am I sitting outside. When I say it is just two budgies people are amazed.
