Societies sleeping on floor?

Post by chirpy » Tue Jun 11, 2013 12:41 am

Hello and thank you for reading, I hope I can get some feedback on my finches behavior.
I have had my finches for 9 days now, they have been great (I have a male and female >presumed as one sings the other chirps). They seem healthy, they eat everything I offer them (seeds, fresh greens, millets, eggs, water) and they bathe every single day. They are both very active.
The female is still very skittish of me, though she is starting to trust me more. The male doesn't seem to mind me as much.
I only touch their cage when needed and food and water is cleaned out first thing in the morning about 8am.
I will periodically check the cage throughout the day for soiled anythings.

The first 4-5 days I had them they would huddle on the perch, preen each other and fall asleep.
since then, they have this "special" little corner they chose and every time its time to go to bed, they jump down off the perch and huddle, preen and fall asleep.

From the other birds I have owned, I know they fluff up, eyes half closed even though they might eat they still look sickly. These guys don't look sick at all. I know that they are masters of diguise when it comes to being sick.. but they look fine.

I know this has been a long read I am so sorry
I was wondering if anyone's little finchies did this too.. actually i just remembered they were doign this at the pet shop I got them from as well.. :|

I don't have any experience with societies but from what I have read they like to sleep in a nest so maybe they think the floor is the next option to cuddle in if they don't have a nest.

If they are eating, drinking, singing/chirping and being active they might be fine. It really sounds like they want a nest or basket to sleep in. I could be wrong and there are lots of experienced people on this forum.

Probably just the place they have chosen to sleep. If there were more, they would all huddle together to sleep. If you put a nestbox in the cage, they would probably use that to sleep in, but only do that if you want babies, because if they are given a nest box, and are M/F, you will end up with babies. If you bought them together, they could be siblilngs, and you don't want to breed siblings.

Thank you for the replies :)
It's just strange that they do this even though I have a nest to sleep in. In another forum (that I made when I got them and asked this Q) they said maybe they are too young to make a nest with nesting material - as all they both do is fly and chew on it in their mouth. They really don't seem to like the nest, I haven't seen them even touch or bounce off it.

Should I leave it in there?

They really DO look super fine... I am waiting for my brother in law to make me a bigger cage so I can house atlesst 4-5 of them. So maybe when there are more they will perch together..? They look like quails cause they are looking at me from the bottom

Also, as for them possibly being siblings.. The female is much much larger than the male. The male is about 70-80% of the females size with this big difference is it still likely they are related? I would live them to have a nest and be comfortable but I don't want to breed them if they are related.

I had my societies for 5 months before they showed any interest in a nest. Mine are all males, but they have paired up into 2 M/M pairs and then Cocoa. The weird thing is 3 of them sleep in the nest @ night. They use to sleep in a pile on a perch, which was absolutely hysterical to watch. My son always use to wonder who would be the "cherry on top" each night  . They are a very funny group...

HOW CUTE :o

My male sleeps on the back of my female sometimes. I peek in (this is on the floor of the cage as well) and they sense me peeking in and they look at me like "what?" like it is so normal LOL. I always explain to my friends that htye look like those extra large marshmallows for smores stacked on top of eachother as they are puffy when they are resting (in a non sick way of course  )

So seeing as they are bouncing around, and reading that your finches did not warm up to a nest I guess they are fine. Do finches like to walk on the floor too? mine seems to just flock down there from time to time and I have a heart attack cause I cant find them for two seconds - as I know they dont like their nest at the moment!
