Blue Dacnis - New photos
My pair of Blue Dacnis (Dacnis cayana) a tanager-type bird.
My sister is here visiting, and even with her super-duper camera, it still does not capture the color intensity of these birds.
They are inquisitive and don't have an aggressive feather on their body.
Although they eat softbill diet, with fresh fruit everyday, their poo is not overly messy, or even noticeable in the bedding.
They also will eat seed, veggies, fruit flies and mealworms.
Their song, even the hen's, is adorable. 'twisp-twisp-twisps' all day long.
I would recommend these delightful birds in a heartbeat.

Re: Blue Dacnis - New photos
I really like these. At our Memphis Zoo they have several different Dacnis species pairs and though I've looked online, can't find a lot info on care or temperament.
Do you have you're mixed with any finches? Any breeding activity going on?
Also, have you got your new Peales and painted's yet? You have to post pics and details. Can't wait!

Re: Blue Dacnis - New photos - Nest
They are in a large aviary with 2 Gouldians, a pair of RedCheek Cordon Bleus,a pair of Forbes Parrot Finches and a pair of Society finches that I sometimes forget I have, they are ALWAYS in a nest!Perfex wrote: I really like these. The Dacnis have been in and out of this type of nest. I bought it at Michael's, formed an "entrance" hole, stuffed it with coconut fiber, and hung it way high in a corner. They have both been stuffing it with sisal, feathers, and some timothy hay. It is pretty well hidden, you can barely see it, let alone the entrance. So - I really have no idea if they are laying - I don't think so - they are both out most of the day.
Some of my other birds, the Forbes especially, seem to prefer this type of nest.
Painted Finch and Peales photos coming soon! Tried all day yesterday - things seem to be going better today.

Re: Blue Dacnis - New photos
Thanks! I think I am pretty much "done", except for Strawberries and Pin-tailed Parrotfinches, and perhaps a pair of Black-cheeked WaxbillsRC#1 wrote: Sunbay You have one nice collection going.
These are all indoor aviary birds - and I am pretty much out of room! There are plenty more I would love to have, but compatibility is a required issue here.
I am just too skittish about outdoor aviaries - we have many predators here, and the weather can be pretty extreme.
Thanks again - you have some beauties yourself!!

Re: Blue Dacnis - New photos
Gorgeous birds! There is an NFSS member who showed a male Blue Dacnis last year in St. Louis, stunning color. I notice you list just 1 PG male, did you lose your other one?
