Do I have babies?

Post by FINCHIE » Sun Sep 07, 2008 5:56 pm

I went out this morning and was feeding my birds when I heard this continual chirping, it was a very soft sound and had to strain myself to hear it but I think it could be babies??? I am not sure who or where they are cos there are 3 nest sitters at the moment. I can't really check due to the physical difficulty of getting in there. So its either Parrot finches or my nest hogging Shaft-tails... Without physically checking is there any difference in the begging sounds of these two species???

These are my first POTENTIAL babies!!!

Ah that's exciting. It's probably better that you can't get to the nests, often times nest checks really upsets the parents and that can lead to neglect of the eggs or chicks. In a few weeks you'll get to see your new additions :D That's exciting!
I don't have any finches right now but I used to, I'll try to provide my knowledge around the forum

Congrats on the hatchlings!
Yes they do make different begging sounds. Don't know how you would describe the difference though.

Make sure you keep the greens and live food up to them.

A lot of my birds are kept the same...to investigate would be too disruptive to the other birds in the flight. So I let them get on with it and won't enter unless I see a problem.
I also keep the same birds as you...if livefood is a problem, give them grated hard boiled egg instead they will thrive on it.

Don't be tempted to look ...leave them alone.I heard begging from a nest of Hecks Grassfinches earlier in the year and after a few days of silence I decided to investigate...just as I was about to go in the little devils started chirping again...bless 'em.
The result...three little beauties....No... four...Hang on... five. And next day 'Where did he come from?'........Six
It's half the fun...Not knowing what's coming.

If it is my shaft-tails would one of them be eating the egg food etc? And one of my shaft tails is still stuffing the nest with feathers (potentially trying to suffocate his mate), do they keep adding to the nest even though they have babies???

So now I am thinking its my Blue Faced Parrot finches, they are all scoffing the egg food and seeings as I have 3 girls and 1 male, the odds are heading their way.

I am so excited either way!!!

I am now sure that my babies are Blue Faced Parrot Finches! They are very very loud! My problem now is that the mum and dad are chasing all the other birds around the aviary trying to protect them I guess? Should this settle down?

Thanks

My guess is that they are not chasing the other birds at all. The cock bird is chasing the hen around wanting to nest again. This is common with parrot finches especially blue faced. Quite often they will have a new nest and start egg laying before the previous clutch has even fledged. They can be very prolific once they get going.

Congrats! Blue face parrot finches are getting to be so hard to find in my neck of the woods! What ARE they eating? I have a pair of red face parrots sitting, and I'm not sure what to expect!

I really don't understand why blue faced parrot finches are rare in other parts of the world. They are relatively simple to cater for, prolific breeders, attractive and are the most active finches you can get!

Ohh god I now have an overload of parrot finch babies.... they are everywhere, peeping out of nests...How do I stop them from continually breeding? They are very cute though...
