We inherited two parakeets last year too! The male is green and yellow and the hen is blue and white. They are similar to green cheek conures in behavior and eat the same veggies and eggfood like finches, but get a parakeet seed mix.

This is the hen, but I can't find my pick of the cock right now. I'll look and post it later.

finchmix22: Your hen is really beautiful. Parakeets were my first birds. I really like them.

Well, have to admit that I am a fan of the budgie! Eyesoffreedom, now you are on the slippery slope, delving into a second type of bird!

My advice is to skip the budgie seed mix, and just use the finch mix you are already feeding your finches. Budgie seed mix just has a lot of extra junk in it, that they will kick out and not eat. Then you have paid about twice as much for your bag of seed, because you are really only using half the bag.

Finch seed mix is better because it only has seeds, and it has a nicer/wider variety of seeds than the budgie mix has. Just read the labels and you will see.

If you can get the bag of seed that the people are already feeding them, then you can keep them on the diet they are used to until they settle into your home, and then gradually switch them.

Oh, and don't forget to quarantine them in a separate room from your finches.

Enjoy them- budiges have awesome characters! :)

OMG this signature is so outdated! Make that 50 chickens!

Hey, I learned something new today! So, budgies eat finch mix of seeds? I've been buying separate parakeet seed mix for the two of them and Finnie is correct that they toss most of the mix and only pick out certain pieces/seeds. They totally ignore pellets that are in the mix too, so I worry about health problems down the road. They don't eat many of the extras I offer, such as lettuce, fruit, eggfood, etc.

Thanks. I was not sure what the official colors were called. What does opaline mean for parakeets?

I thought budgies liked the bigger seeds like sunflower etc, they are not in my finch mix :? Most of the seeds in my finch mix are small

As for the seed mix question, my finches and budgies all eat the same seed, which is a mixture of finch seed, and budgie mix.
