Pipkin not recovering

Post by Angela&Shalamar » Tue Sep 03, 2013 1:54 pm

So poor Pipkin got his nail caught in the nest 2 days ago but he doesn't seem to be recovering. He's alert and seems to be eating at least a lil, but he's still not flighted. Even took him into the bathroom to see if he would but he's still not right. Legs work, wings work, no breaks or blood and he's alert but something just isn't right. Vet appt tomorrow at noon.

Shame. Sure hope your vet can help. If he got caught and strained to get himself free he could have pulled flight muscles, maybe.
Hoping all is well soon.

Hope it all works out. I recently had a Purple Grenadier male get hung up in a nest, I found him dangling. His one leg stuck straight out behind him, so I feared that he had broken his hip. The next day he could only hop around the bottom of the cage, but within another day or so, he was back to normal, flying around the cage, perching on both feet like nothing had ever happened. I think he just pulled a muscle.

Vet said probably soft tissue issues. Complete "bed rest' and anti-inflammatories for a week. Had to punch holes in a plastic bin because the vet doesn't want me to use any type of cage so there is no chance of him climbing or perching. 90 dollars and change latter...still he's worth it :)

That is not a bad vet bill. Everytime I take my birds to the avian vet, I'm out a couple hundred fast.

Pipkin flew out of his "bed rest" cage when I opened it to clean and medicate him this morning. That's the first time he's done that and the first time I've seen flight that looked decent since he got hurt. Couple more days I'll try putting him back into a larger cage in preparation for return to the flock. He's even chirping and singing a bit...so relieved.
