I came home to horror tonight. I knew something was wrong immediately. All the finches were hopping around on the bottom of the tall flight cage. They never go down there....
Lucy was in a corner with her face pressed between the bars. Her entire head had been plucked bald and bloody and one eye was removed. She couldn't move. She was just barely breathing. Her beak had been penetrated and blood was on the corners of her beak.
I had to put her out of her misery. I am so sick to my stomach and heart broken. I put her back in with the other three this AM thinking her beak was injured earlier in the week by a faulty feeder.
I am so sorry Lucy!

Fly high above the Rainbows with your first love. Hope I get to see you in heaven someday.

O NO! I'm so sorry

R.I.P Lucy. Don't blame yourself we can only do our best and we can't watch them 24/7.

OMG!!! I'm so very sorry to hear about Lucy passing

. That is so sad...Poor Lucy

. Gosh, I hope Woodie didn't witness what happened to her mommy. You must be sick to your stomach. I know how much you loved her. You gave her a beautiful life, Jennie...take comfort in knowing this and that she is finally with Charlie again. Please take Woodie away from those pied birds...I wouldn't trust them for a second. Sending you hugs, kisses and much love. xoxo

I did take her out... She was on the ground with the other two. I think she participated. She was over in the corner with them.
I had to run out so fast this AM. I had a bad feeling, but I had to leave, my coworker was honking the horn...

...maybe Woodie was just checking on her mom...I cant imagine she would participate. I know you're beating yourself up right now, but its not your fault. I would NEVER have imagined something like that would happen. A little plucking maybe...but a full on attack!!! Shocking...Mother Nature can be so cruel.

So very sorry for you. What a terrible thing to find.
There is a very big possibility that the others did not attack Lucy with intent to kill. If she went down & out on her own, the others would then move in. It is unfortunate that she was not quite gone yet. But a down and dead/dying bird will attract the others. It may not have been their doing initially.
Fly high and free, Lucy. You will be missed.

So sorry this happened. I most likely was an accident. I personally in all the years of raising finches/birds have not seen them attack or finish off a dying bird. If anything some of mine gathered around and stayed near the one passing or had passed away. My shaft tails gathered around to comfort and sit near each other.

Nerien I am so distraught over this. I have no clue. It's making me sick. Literally sick. You can see the pics if you want. Very sad

So sorry you came home to this! The animal world is often cruel and just because we bring animals into our homes and care for them and love them; in the end, they are animals and there is no explaining "why" they do what they do sometimes. Even knowing why cannot prevent the behavior that their instinct directs them to engage in. We came home once to one of our dogs with his eye literally hanging out of the socket. Obivously, there was a dog disagreement and the little one lost. Veterinarian husband surgically saved the eye but not the eyesight. I felt sick for days knowing that our dogs that get along with each other so well could harm one another so badly. We all do what we can do and that's all we can do! Hugs of comfort to you.
