There was just a story on the news recently about humans who are building up a resistance to antibiotics due to overuse of antibiotics. For example, those who pressure their doctor to prescribe an antibiotic when they have a cold or the flu, neither of which responds to antibiotics. Then when they develop an illness that can be treated with an antiobiotic, the medicine is no longer as effective. I think the same would apply to our birds--overmedicate, and then when they really need that antibiotic, it will no longer be effective for them.

I saw that story, too, Sally. Along with developing antibiotic resistance, as Debbie mentioned, over-medicated birds are not building their own immune systems, so they can actually become less healthy than others.

not keen at all on ronivet or the other ones. i used it once to keep some gouldians alive but never again.

Great advice...so worming every three months ok....but using antibiotics as a precaution no....good to know

What about using coccivet every three months...is that overkill...or only use it if floors get wet from rain?

I've never used coccivet. My birds are outside and they LOVE to play in the rain and the puddles all day long. I have never had a problem with wet, from the rain or from me hosing down the floor.

only use this product say - if it had been raining for several days straight.....only then after the rain .....especially if you have dirt/grass floors. you can be lucky for years until one day you have an outbreak and it will wipe em all out.


antibiotics

that would be like going to the doctor and saying need some antibiotics for a lung infection from a bout of flu. atm i have no flu or symptoms so just a precaution.

no point -it only works on symptoms and the more you use it the lesser it performs the job.

better to do this

1.outside aviary. roof of flight totally covered with transparent laser light. that way wild birds landing on the roof cannot transmit parasites to the inmates or foul their drinking water.
2.full cement floor so you can get in there and hose or scrub it down.
3.nesting material hung from a wire basket -saves fouling the material
4.food and water - never place under or near perches.

Great advice Bill...you're a legend....what about apple cider vinegar...the vet told me i should add it to the water once a month...10ml per litre...is this ok?

yeah it's fine.-but it must be the raw apple cider vinegar from the health foods not apple cider from the supermarket

My birds have been resting now for 2 months.....it's winter now and the birds are eating 2 eggs a day....but when they were breeding they would only eat 1
