Emergency please help!!! My finch look sick...

Post by David » Sun Nov 10, 2013 4:14 pm

Oh no my zebra finch was kind of sitting the corner of the cage floor, and she never been like this since I had her for 2years :( all she does is eat some but now mostly only drink water, but at the same time she shake her head and some water spill around even little on my face as I observed her earlier. I make it short here, so now my question is : is she try to get rid of something in her system? She still ate some food earlier now just not want to fly or move beside drink water :( I can't offer to take her to Vet yet, can I put some vitamin powder for her?? Thanks in advance. Her corp kind of full maybe slow digestion? :?

Does she shake her head from side to side water comes out but does seed or food also come up/out with the water? Is it clear water or kind of frothy? What do the droppings look like, color. Pictures will help.

Right now it is important to keep her warm, add a heat lam to the cage, temperature at about 85 degrees.

Hi Cindy,
Good to see your reply. I just put 2 drops of apple cider vinegar on her water, she drank few times and now fly up on perch and rest, also pick some food on floor to eat by flying down. (I just changed her water today, which cleaned water like normally, because I changed my finches water daily.)
Sometime eat on the seed container too. But maybe some better than earlier, just still open her mouth once a while beside shaking some still. She shake her head left to right and sometime right to left. So I think it's side to side. I only see water came out not food or seed or anything. I will post pic for u later since I never done it in this forum website so need to see how it works lol. Now just want her to recover [-o< I didn't clean her nest for few weeks, and today I did cleaned it by soak in hot water and wiped it dry. It looks kind of messy with dried dropping kinda smell too before clean it. Hope not because the yeast infection from the nest tho.

put a heat lamp on her to keep her warm. Where are you located?

There may be something going on with your bird because droppings should not smell and it does sound like she's throwing up or coughing up fluids. I would definitely add heat to her cage so she can go to it or away from it as she pleases. Any other symptoms?

I mentioned earlier about the color of her droppings, do they look runny, dark, white?

Hi everyone sorry took so long to reply.

Cindy, yes the dropping color was kind of watery with some green color. I fed my zebbies for veggies daily beside seeds, she loved Romane lettuce so much. I did put lamp over the cage but she was frightened and fly hard in the cage so I took it away. Now she seems fine so far not shake head yet and went to sleep by got in her nest.

Debbie, the nest smell I guess because since there were some eggs inside for few weeks, which I didn't clean the nest for her that long :( and maybe there were some infection since old eggs inside? Maybe that passed to her and make her feel sick like? And also she took bath daly 1-2times, liked stand on top of her nest edges to clean/ :) dry her body and feather, so perhaps make the eggs and dried-dropping became contaminated, while she sleep in there every single night :|

I left my orange light on for all my finches come out from nests to eat:) I just transferred all my finches pic to PC and didn't find it from folders yet, instead I just use my phone to attached the pic here. by the way I am in SF Bay Area , CA. I am happy I figured out where the attach image button is from the website and first post my finch pic lol!

Eggs will dry out over time so I don't think you need to worry about that.
I would stop feeding greens to get a good idea what color her droppings really are. Watch and see if she continues to shake her head and throw up. Feel her breast bone and if it is very thin and sharp she is losing weight which is not a good sign.
good luck

I just took more pic of her today doing daytime, here is my female finch.she was looking at my phone since wondering 'what is that?' By head down hehe.
She is doing well today so far and eat normal, no more shame head or throwing up. Guess my apple cider vinegar saved her from getting worse =D> I will keep watched these days even she is getting better.
