I was told today that the strawberry finches that were recently imported came from Singapore.

Re: New Bird Imports Into The U.S
I have 2 pair of Strawberries. One pair bought privately before the import, and another pair from the import flood.
Really like them, but to be perfectly honest, I prefer the Painted Finches!
They are calmer, and are always in gorgeous color. This photo is few months old - the males now have much larger and deeper red chests.
They are not always easy to find, and I hope they don't get overlooked with breeders keeping them available and genetically diversified here in the States.
Jmo - variety makes the world go 'round!

Beautiful painted finches.
I'd rather have those too.
I'm thinking of trading the strawberries to someone determined to work hard with them. They don't do a whole lot for me.

For those in the U.S., David at BirdProduct.com has Swee Waxbills (Coccopygia melanotis) for $70 each, Blue-Capped Cordon Bleus (Uraeginthus cyanocephalus) at $60 each, and Strawberry Finches (Amandava amandava) at $110 each. Folks, these three species were/are threatened to disappear from U.S. aviculture but we have the opportunity to add these species to our collections/breeding programs at AMAZING prices. For those interested in possible species and have the proper housing requirements, please look these species up! Wow!

Re: New Bird Imports Into The U.S
Thanks for posting that update, bugaboo5. I'm happy to see that Ponytail Joe has some Strawberries and Blue-caps for our Canadian members. And I love that you are reminding people that this is an opportunity to get birds that haven't been available for a while.
Most everyone knows my fascination with Strawberries, and this may be the chance of a lifetime to get some of these birds. I've been told that it took a year to arrange this shipment, and there may never be another. I'm surprised that they didn't all get snapped up right away, but then they still aren't cheap--but they are selling for less than what people were charging for their old, past breeding age Berries.
The Blue-capped Cordon Bleus became very difficult to find over a year ago, so it is wonderful that some have come in, though not in the numbers that we saw with the Strawberries.
It has been years since I have seen Swees (Yellow-bellied Waxbills) for sale. When I asked a broker why, he said that there simply wasn't much demand for them, so importers were concentrating on the species they knew they could sell easily. These waxbills are absolutely delightful, tiny little birds--sweet, sweet, sweet! I had given up on ever having any again, so I was thrilled to see them available once again.

Shhhh!
I'm hoping to get some Swees if I can get set up for them before they're all gone!
I learned the hard way to control my impulse to buy birds before I have their space ready!

I am hoping to get a BCCB hen from Ahmed, if and when he has any available. Bert is desperate for a mate and I think a hen would make him sooo happy...maybe you can mention it to Ahmed the next time you see/speak to him. Fingers crossed he will have one for me in 2014.
I'm thinking about a Shaft Tail or Gouldian pair from Su too, but I can reach her via facebook. Btw, tell Helen that her Stars and Owls are healthy, happy and doing wonderful!!! Such peaceful birds
xoxo

I'll give Ahmed a call tomorrow and see what he has. The one problem is that he sent you two unrelated males from the only two bloodlines he had at that time, and I don't know if he has any other bloodlines. So a hen would be a sibling to Ernie in order to be unrelated to Bert. It would probably be better if you could get a totally unrelated hen. And I'll pass the word to Helen.

Thanks...I actually thought Bert and Ernie were brothers...but I should have realized they aren't. Only Bert is banded. I wouldn't mind pairing Bert with one of Ernie's sisters. Ernie is doing well with Curly (society), but I think Bert will be better with a hen than another male. I would consider a BCCB hen from another small, trusted breeder...but I definitely prefer getting one from Ahmed. I appreciate your advice and help. And thanks for passing my message along to Helen
