Please help my finch!!!

Post by David » Thu Jan 09, 2014 7:06 pm

Hi everyone, I put my 6 (male) zebra finches into a flight cage one day for temporary and was cleaning the other cages, they sometime chased each other that day. I put them back to original cages afterward, last week I noticed one of the male left foot was hidden under his stomach. I thought he just perch and rest, yesterday I see a big bump-like on the last toe nail:( see the pic below- there's a round shape bump like on the left foot 3rd toe? what is that? Was it from the fight or chasing that day while I put them together temporary? Is it possible injure himself while chase other or chasing by other finches? He was a very HEALTH boy and never have problems since he was born last year. I am so worry about him and don't know What to do now, I cant want take him to Vet since nothing nearby. Is there anything I can help him to sooth the wound? He still flying and jumping in the cage like normal, hope get some advices soon from you all. Thanks in advance.

I see the bump; it surely doesn't look too bad. I don't think you have to take him to the vet. A bird can injure, and even lose a toe, and still get around just fine. Good luck.

My soc... (Daddy of the family) I noticed missed toes on both feet. Then it got swollen.. Then got better after 3-4 days. I have no idea what happened. But for now (hopefully forever) he's good. I hope its nothing for your little guy, he's a cutie!

Best of luck!

I had a zebra with a foot injury too...it was bleeding. I cleaned it up with peroxide on a Q-tip, stopped the bleeding and put a tiny bit of Neosporin (the regular clear one/not pain relief or cream one) on it. She healed beautifully. Your guy looks ok...hopefully he will improve within a few days.

Thanks for everyone reply. Is it possible a bumble foot? Since only one side of the leg swollen maybe caused injury? He is a cutie pie to me, always singing to me daytime, even when his foot still swollen now.

Even it doesn't look bad, but it sure got a bump on its foot. I am wondering if I need to put any antibiotic to his leg? Since no bleeding but only bump like. I also see a dot-like size of black color under the bump, ( where just above the nail and under the bump )it's hard to see it from the pic unless look closely to it. I heard black color is not good if appear on its leg, I want to do my part to help him, don't want him loose any of his toe nail at all :( [-o< He is a very healthy boy

I would catch him up and look real close, even use a magnifying glass if you need to, be sure there are no strings or any foreign material wrapped around the toe. If there is a black dot it may be infected from a cut so I would certainly apply an antibiotic ointment to the area. If it's hard and sealed up maybe soak for a while in warm water to open it up a bit. You will know whats needed when you get a good look and can assess it better.
If it is a cut or sore be sure to look around his environment for anything sharp or even rough perches that he goes on often.
best of luck

Debbie, thanks for your advice. I just look carefully and don't see any fibers wrap around it. What kind of antibiotic I can apply? Like those our human use from the store? Or it have to be the one from pet store? Do you think he will be healing up soon from the foot? I hope it will get better [-o<

Oh by the way the day when I put the males together, this is the exactly kind of cage I put them in. See this link:

http://ca-en.hagen.com/Bird/Housing/Hybrid-Cages/83300

(Even tho he have been using this kind of 'brown perches' since he fledgling last year and never had problems. Perhaps I was thinking maybe when he escaped from the chasers and injured himself when perching?) now I put him in another cage with natural wood perches now, instead of the plastic brown perches from above. Hope it will help hi recover. :(

Hard to say where he injured himself and/or on what. Just do a look see and maybe you will find something obvious.
best wishes for a speedy recovery
