Nesting

Hi all,
About two weeks ago my wife bought me two pair of zebra's. Unfortunately one escaped out of the cage which left me with two females and one male. Noticed yesterday that they had started to nest and when I asked the wife if she had seen who was going in the nest with the male she said they all were. Will the male mate with both females or only one?

I personally have not had a male service two hens and raise two clutches.I have had suspicious amounts of eggs in one nest though.
And have had one parent raise clutches after one parent has been lost.
They may be constructing a roosting nest.Time will tell.

Since they are zebras you will possibly see some eggs very soon. They will all probably sleep in the nest since zebras love to sleep in nest. Since you have two females and one male there should be no problems. But who knows with zebras. They are not predictable.

I had zebras before and at one point I was in a similar situation.

I remember the first two/three times things didn't work out cause even though I had three available nests they insisted on sharing one nest which was too small for two females to raise two clutches, chicks would fall out all the time and none survived. So I got them one large nest and that solved the problem!

Just make sure you provide a large nest that'll fit all of them comfortably and there shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for your replies , unfortunately there is no longer a problem as the fawn coloured female was dead on the bottom of the cage when I got home from work tonight.The good news is that I saw the nutural male and the white female billing which I hope is part of the mating routine in finches. I am new to them but admired them for years and will be keeping them for years to come.
