sylvester got the tweety bird
My cat got my canary, Woodstock , broke his leg and bit him on friday, i took him to the vet yesterday they couldnt do much cause i only had 100$ so they didnt do anything besides give me at home anti biotics and anti inflammatory. The vet said hes doing good despite condition, my cats saliva didnt seem to affect him?
hes made it pretty solid, has remained calm, eating and drinking well, just really imbalanced and dragging left leg.
His foot started swelling/bleeding last night, and today two of his toes are blackeningD:
I let him soak in warm water for a couple min and then put him in betadine, let him dry a bit warmly and went on to splinting his leg. I put small soft cotton pad around his leg and taped it as best as i could and his leg just sticks out and looks really uncomfortable. Two of the toes as i sad are blackening some in middle of foot, i cant afford vet amputation, would i need to amputate them? He can only drag his leg do you think his gimp will become walk able? Would it be at all better to ampuyate whole leg at fracture site and how to bandage/prevent infection?
Any feedback would be greatly aappreciated
UPDATE:
His feet are actually darastically less swollen and only the tips and nails of the blackened toes are black! It mustv been his circulation, possibly meaning his splint mighy be doing him good?

Re: sylvester got the tweety bird
I am sorry to hear your poor canary was caught by your cat. Many finches need a leg or partial leg amputation due to bands cutting into and growing into their legs or they have an injury and the leg does not get any blood supply. Many breeders use toe nail clippers to cut off the dead tissue, so it's not hanging there and getting in the way. If just the toes are turning black, those are dead. You could snip them off or wait to make sure the rest of the leg is healthy or dying. I have two handicap finches with half a leg and they adapt well. I put a ladder and platform perch in their cage to help them get around. I hope he gets better and adjust well.

What Just Happened To The Cat Got The Canary Post...........
.............I was in the middle of responding to? Anyway, I think thet the vet is despicable for not amputating the leg because you "only" had $100.00 with you. Really cares about the well being of animals, doesn't he? The canary woul have been (will be) fine with one leg. I have a 9 year old male that had one amputated several years ago due to the dreaded band impaction. Still sings up a storm every day. Hope he isn't in too much pain and the leg eventually heals (not very likely) or dies and falls off. Best of luck to you and your bird. Bob

I edited my post and it disapeared till it was approved. Thanks for the reply, the vet really didnt help me at all -.-
Im hoping if the leg will heal it wont be gimp and if it is gimp that it will indeed die off, without pain!

Yeah he has a leg band thats pretty loose on his leg and slids down to his back toe which i hope doesnt do damage with the splint he has now. His toes and foot swelling has come down tremendously so hhopefully i did his splint correctly!

One time, I was editing one of my posts just as someone was reading it, and it disappeared on them too. So I guess that may have happened when Bob was posting a reply. I'll merge these two topics, since they are all about the same subject.

Re: sylvester got the tweety bird
I feel your pain on this. Last year I came home to find a penguin zebra hen hanging by her leg in the top corner of her cage after wedging it in. She is now an amputee, but a happy girl. Though it was not my fault, it is certainly a horrible feeling. I wish you and your bird the best!
