Cabinet Breeders

Post by Lachlan » Sat Mar 22, 2014 5:16 am

Hi Guys,

I'm located in Sydney Australia and my season started a few months ago and now that everything has paired off I am left with a spare breeding cabinet (only own 2) I currently only breed gouldians, st helenas, strawberries and blue-faced parrot finches. I'm pretty keen on trying a new species that isn't a Zeb or Bengalese (more because I have bred them in the past rather than not liking them) and have found it very hard to find a list of finches that can be bred well in cabinets. I was hoping that some of you guys could supply a list of what finches would be suitable to be separated for the breeding season and then let back into an aviary for the offseason. I'm leaning towards ribbon finches but have heard the need privacy in order to breed. Thanks :)

I don't breed in cabinets so can't help you there, just wanted to say welcome to the forum :)
I'm sure someone that does breed in cabinets will jump in soon.

Goldbreasted waxbills can do well in cabinets, as well as the Cordon Bleus and Senegal Fire finches, as long as they are large enough and decorated with some plastic plants to give privacy.

Welcome to the forum! There's lots of good reading at the Finch Information Center, linked at left, and the members are always ready to help. If you put your general location in your profile, it helps when answering locale-specific questions later on.

Welcome from Canada!
Pardon my lack of knowledge on this, but I won't know unless I ask. :-)
What are 'breeding cabinets' ? I have come across pictures but not sure if this is what we're talking about :?:

Welcome. There is a gentleman on one of my facebook groups that builds cabinets. He builds gorgeous reed cabinets and aviaries out of furniture pieces. I will try to get some info on species that do well in them and get back to you!

lovezebs Most of the time, it is just a difference in terminology in different countries. In the UK, it is very common to say breeding cabinets, and they usually mean a breeding cage that is enclosed on three sides, top, and bottom, with only the front open (wired). This provides privacy for each breeding pair and eliminates the territorial problems that crop up when breeding pairs can see other nearby birds. All-wired cages are not as commonly used in some countries as they are in the US. I use pieces of wood or curtains between my breeding cages to offer the same privacy.

I personally would call it a decorative flight cage.

Lovezebs

This is one of my breeding cabinets that I made last year. It is 4'x2'x2' and has a spot that I can put a divider down the middle. I keep Peter's Twinspots and Schlegel's Twinspots in the ones I have.

Welcome saulosirds!
O.K. So, the breeding cabinet that saulosirds posted is great! I think my parrot finches, owls and green singers would all do well in a cabinet of that size, as long as there is greenery for hiding and good lighting. That looks like a great option!

That's beautiful. I was going to say, can you send me one, lol..or two.... but I'll have to satisfy myself by just asking, how did you put it together? Was it really difficult to build?
I so envy you folks who are talented with building stuff like that. I mean I can nail or glue or screw things together, but it usually ends up looking like kaka.
