Covering cages?

Post by jkbirdz2 » Mon Apr 28, 2014 7:16 pm

I am curious to know if anyone covers their cages at night? A few seem to be getting spooked in the early morning hours. Don't see any obvious reasons for them being spooked yet, but thinking that covering the cage at night would help keep them calmer?

Hi. I never cover the cages. My cages are in a quiet area in a separate part of the house or outside.
You can use the search button on the top right to find previous posts on cage covering as well as tons of other info.

I don't cover cages, either. I do have a night light - just enough so they can see a little and are not in the deep dark. It may not prevent all night frights, but at least they can get back to their perches when it's over.

I cover my Zebras, they’re kept in my bedroom so it’s kind of a necessity for me.

I have never covered my birds. Recently I added an LED light to the birdroom that has a lunar setting (blue light) that I flip on at night. It doesn't seem to keep the birds awake but provides enough light for me to take the dogs out without flipping on the big light and waking them up as well as allowing them to find perches of something frightens them during the night.

I don't cover my finches, only my parrots. I keep them in separate room. I have a nightlight on where the finches are, so they don't fly into something if they get spooked.

I have always covered my birds at night with heavy, "blackout" linens. They are in my living and family rooms and I feel it is of utmost importance to keep them on a natural daylight schedule. It just works for me. My birds usually live very long, with very few health issues. JMO Bob

I cover mine. We live in a small apartment so there's no room elsewhere since the "master" is the biggest room. If I didn't cover mine... They would be up at 4 singing lol

We don't cover ours.
We have some Chilli pepper lights as a night light. :D

I used to cover mine when we had them near an area with lots of lights and activity at night.
But we stopped after we had an incident where one landed on the cage bar and got a toe caught up in a fiber from the fabric. The bird was okay, but it scared me and I stopped covering and realized they were just fine without it.

I cover my birds at night after they're in the nest once the sun goes down~ They are in front of an east-facing window in my room, so they're still up quite early no matter what

I typically don't go to bed until midnight or so though, so I would feel bad coming into my room and turning on a light if they weren't covered. However, I also have some lights on a faux plant in my room that I leave on, and you can see some dim light through the cover I use. So they have just enough light to see so I don't startle them when I come in.

I cover mine in the winter with a thermal heat reflective blanket, and also when they're sick to hold extra heat in. It's cold where we are so I have to do whatever I can to optimize the heat.

Where did you get your blanket? I live in Wisconsin and it can get pretty cold here in the winter. :)
